I have been sugar free for 2 months now after hearing about Sweet Poison on the radio.  I have been trying to lose 3-4 kilos for the past 4 years and nothing I have tried has made any difference at all.  I always wanted to snack and couldn't stop myself.  I have found it really easy to cut out sugar and the weight just fell off.  I have tried to share my new found discovery with friends and family and have met with disdain and annoyed responses.  They say they are pleased that I have found something that works for me but clearly are not interested in trying this for themselves.  (The sugar addiction is obviously in full swing with them).  My partner has told me to stop 'going on' so much about sugar while eating even more himself.  I have found this unbelievable as I can see what the sugar addiction is doing for them.  I don't know if anyone else is having the same problem.

Oh Shirley . .  how I sympathise with you :-(   They just won't listen, will they!  Mind you, I think Jesus had a bit of the same problem.

Frustrating as it may seem, and I have plenty of your experience,  the only person you can change is yourself.  You can inform people who ask for it, but persuasion is a waste of time.  You can sow seeds of doubt in people's minds, which is what parables are all about. But teaching by example is your best bet.

I find it so sad to see people eating themselves to death, and some of them only in their 20s.

BTW you might enjoy Christine Cronau's book The Fat Revolution.

PS.  Despite the "religious"  comments above, I'm not a "believer"  or a proselytizer :-)

Thank you for your reply.  It was just so frustrating.  I just want to share it with everyone.  I am not 'starving' anymore as I used to be and food tastes delicious.  I can't believe how good everything tastes now.

I have been sugar-free for nearly 5 months and I can't believe it but my partner who was so sick of listening to me going on about 'sugar' has watched me continue to loose weight while he has put it on so has now joined me and is happy to give up sugar himself.  The 'sugar' police have started in New Zealand and there has been a huge seminar in Auckland recently with regard to reducing sugar-filled drinks.  This is the first step and the adds have started on TV to cut out sugar in coffee and add Natvia so we are going to enjoy watching the outcome of all this.

Good to hear you are doing well, Shirley.  My husband and I are also on this new way of living.  Weightloss is quite slow for us, but we are happy to keep going without sugar.   I have learnt one thing - that the body gets used to eating the same food every day, and changing the food we eat, seems to change weight loss. Best of luck,   Christa

    Hi Shirley

I know exactly what you mean about no one else wanting to know. I have been sugar free now for 2 and 1/2 years and no one in my family has joined me. They accept and respect the fact that I have chosen to eat this way but none of them are interested in doing it themselves. Even though a couple of them desperately need to.

My friends and some of my family {siblings} look at me as though I am to be pitied and roll their eyes to the heavens when I say no thanks to cakes and chocolate especially when eating out.

I just tell myself that in the end I will be much healthier than them and I actually feel sorry for them because they are all over weight. But it is a bit disheartening sometimes and you feel like you are the only person who gets it. But that is their choice. We cant help those that don't want to help themselves. :)

So, keep positive Shirley and all the very best to you. It really is worth the effort.

    Cheers

In one of the personal growth courses I did a few years ago, the guru kept emphasising the idea of "Letting what happens be OK"  (LWHBOK).  It's not that hard to do and it takes a lot of pressure off yourself.  You really are not responsible  for how others conduct their lives. Sure it's frustrating to see people eating/drinking/drugging themselves into an early grave - especially those whom you care about. But there really is no workable alternative to teaching  by example. The best you can offer is to sow seeds. So just LWHBOK and enjoy your own freedom - if someone else gets the message, great!  If they don't well that's just the way things are.

Sounds like very good advice John. I am going to add LWHBOK to my list of affirmations. :)

Sugar-Free has been going really well for my partner for the past 2 weeks and he has lost 2 kgs and 2 inches from his waist.  Just when I was so excited for him he developed gout (he has had it quite a few times in the past) but this time it was particularly painful and he read that he shouldn't have dairy products, saturated fats etc.  He's still quite happy to be sugar-free but it doesn't leave him much he can eat.  I can't convince him about saturated fats as he has had high cholesterol and high blood pressure in the past as well.  Does anyone know - other than sugar - what causes gout?  Is he right and it's dairy products and saturated fats?

Try a bit of Googling  research, including Wikipedia.
