How Much Sugar?

Hello from Lizzy in Adelaide

I have read and enjoyed David's Sweet Poison Quit Plan and have been fructose free for about 3 months now. however, I am not seeing the weight loss I know I was expecting. I have been pretty strict with myself and still no joy. I would love to hear from any post menopausal women who have managed to lose more than 2 kg and I can only presume this is my problem.

Still, I will stick with the no sugar plan, I just know it makes a lot more sense than eating loads of the white stuff.

    HI Adelaide

I just read Steve's book;it struck a deep cord in me so started a no fructose diet just last Sat. I am post menopausal myself and hopeful I will lose weight eating this way, too.  I am sure it will be healthier eating but even healthier if weight comes off. My best to you and me!

Maybe you don't need to lose much weight? What is your BMI?

The only important  criteria are that you feel full at the end of every meal and that your weight is under control - aka not increasing.  If these apply to you, you should be OK and stand to reap all the other benefits of a reduced fructose lifestyle.

    Thanks John!

I have weight to lose for sure! BMI now 30.8;can't wait to get to 29 as a 1st step.

Today is the end of week one for me. It has been challenging- esp at 4 pm. I eat 15 almonds at that time and one cup of raw veggies- instead of my usual cracker binge- one step at a time .Sugar has really been my addiction forever! I am visually drawn to all of it-and now try to look it in the eye and say,you are making my body ill.

Thanks for any suggestions from all!

My bmi (last time it was checked) was about 27. I am 6ft tall and weigh 88 kg. I know it should be quite a bit less than that and the extra weight I carry is all around my tummy, the danger area.

    Any suggestions?

Your BMI  is 26.3. You should aim for 20 to 24.
Just persevere :-)  Rome wasn't built in a day - it took a long time to get overweight, so it may take a while to lose it.

Also, I suggest you keep a detailed record of your fructose intake over a two-week period. use the tables in SPQP  and a set of kitchen scales to work it out. You may get a surprise!

If necessary, remove the offending foods from your intake.

It may even be worth going "low carb"  for a few weeks. Are you diabetic?  Also, if he/she has any awareness of fructose metabolism, consult your doctor.

BUT DON'T GIVE UP ...................... your life depends on it :-)

    Hi Lizzy,

I live in Adelaide too and am 4 weeks into sugar free. I am losing weight - see my introductory post last night, however I have a lot to lose. I am 5 foot 5, I think, and 90 kg. Now 86.4kg after 4 weeks.

All I would say is don't get hung up about BMI. This can be so unrealistic. My brother-in-law is extremely fit and currently cycling the tour de france route prior to the big race. He eats a lot and is very muscly and lean. In terms of BMI he measures up as obese = ridiculous. I don't even know nor care what my BMI is. I just want to get to a happy clothing size and more importantly feel healthy and light and be able to comfortably exercise.

    Keep up the good work.

I suggest you read Robert Lustig's most recent book "Fat Chance". I'm sure you will find it very motivating. It explains why we crave sweet food and why we have trouble stopping doing it . . .  and it's hormonal, not greed or sloth.

In the quit-smoking area it is often helpful to link up with a "quit buddy" - someone you can share your journey with and to whom you are responsible. It's best done person-to-person rather than by email or a forum.

I'm 10 days in. I'm 40 years old and have had 4 kids. My twins are only 14 mths old. I would like to lose 16kg ideally. In 10 days, I've lost 0.6kg but I've also lost 3cm around the middle. So don't forget to also measure cm!

I have a six month plan. I'm not expecting it to happen overnight. I'm also doing a little bit of jogging and some light weights and yoga at home. I'm trying to make gentle changes that are not too hard to stick to.

Sounds like you are all doing fine :-)  just don't expect instantaneous change, but persevere, and you WILL get there! If you're having backsliding problems I  suggest you chum up with another fructose-avoider and monitor each other.
