    Hi Everyone..

I'm vaguely on day 4 of not eating fructose (not sure of shop bought things - was at a food court yesterday and didn't know what to trust - ended up getting a yiros (kebab?) which I hoped wasn't too bad - obviously the sugar is probably in the pita bread and the garlic sauce and who knows - the meat?!!).

I have rushed out to buy dextrose and try cooking things with it - because in the past I couldn't eat anything sweet when I was on no sugar things so I was excited to think I could eat something vaguely sweet. I have made the homemade chocolate ice cream. It was delicious and I didn't think it was at all different from other chocolate ice cream. Very nice. Then I made the chocolate slice that someone put on here..  (Michelle) and it was certainly not sweet at all but delicious and very eat-able. As such I ate half of it (I am a COE!! - compulsive overeater - and no amount of food is ever enough for me - hence which this food plan is so interesting to me).

Now how can I put this? Does eating too much dextrose cause diarrhea?!! I am slowly working my way through David's first book but I vaguely remember reading somewhere that too much of some substances causes it. I can't remember if that was dextrose or something else..

I guess if I actually get a chance to keep reading I'll find out.. I was just wondering if anyone else has had this effect!!! And while I have eaten half the slice over the course of 24 hours I didn't eat the whole thing.. that might still be a lot for some people but for me it's actually an improvement!! I have weighed myself this morning and will be interested to see how this thing goes..

while i can't imagine so (i reckon that would be like water doing the same thing), it may be from another ingredient you ate? or even from your body adjusting to no sugar?? like a withdrawal symptom but not exactly.

    Hello Robyn
    and welcome to the forum.
I don't think eating dextrose should cause diarrhea. But a warning..........David does say in his book that it is best to avoid eating with glucose (dextrose) while going through the cooling off sugar period.

I still find even after four months that if I eat a very rare dextrose desert, that it can still set up sugar cravings. I make dextrose muffins, bread and biscuits for my husband who is not a COE like myself and is not addicted to fructose and I avoid eating them as it makes me want more.

My appetite control has made itself evident thank goodness and I certainly don't eat anything near like I used to eat. But I have remained a more or less savory eater and have lost 10 kilos.
    cheers
    Freda

Yes, you are better off in the first month or so to just not eat anything sweet at all, and get your taste for sugar out of your system.  I am only 5 weeks in and have had occasional dextrose things that I've made but I've found they put my thinking off-track.  I'm way better if I just eat savoury or non-sweet things.

I am a compulsive overeater / binge eater too and haven't felt like bingeing doing this way of eating, but I find my thoughts wandering and obsessing over the sweet recipes I'm making.

To answer your comment on the kebab above, I did the same thing, and I only had chicken & tabhouli on mine - and boy did I have stomach cramps !!  Never again.  Must have been the tabhouli ... maybe it has onions?? :)

I too asked this question once and never got an answer. It did make me looser than usual.

    Hi,

I have to say that while I am only at day 4, I have noticed that I have the runs a bit.  I have not had any dextrose so I wonder if it is just the withdrawal process.  I feel like munching all the time, but don't have anything to munch on (I am trying to go low-carb too, so plain potato chips and the like are out), so I do have to exercise willpower (alas...)

With the low carb I am likely to go the opposite of the runs, so therefore I think it is significant.

It will be an interesting month going through this.

Some dextrose has preservative added - I bought one that had preservative 220 - can cause gastrointestinal problems in large quantities. Didn't think to check, its in the rubbish now!

I have just ordered preservative free from the internet.
