Bought some Pure Harvest Rice Malt Syrup from a Health Food Shop and have been having it on pikelets and on my rolled oats as wel. I love it but can someone please tell me if it is a good of one to stay away from.
                           Thanks.

I would also like to know this but before I go and buy some please.  I found some Malt Extract today but it was 48% sugar so I didn't buy it.  What else is there for our porridge.  I would also love to know about an alternative to my milo if anyone knows of one.

Rice malt syrup is perfectly fine! i've got to buy another bottle actually cause I got some crumpets when I went shopping the other day.  Rice malt syrup is a great substitute for honey and golden syrup in recipes.

I have been using this lovely gem but Pure Harvest Organic Rice Malt Syrup I buy from Coles supermarket - I have noticed on the back it says total sugars 4.7 per serve and 47 g per 100g.  I have been using it as its delightful on weetbix but surely this is not actually ok?  Can someone please clarify

yes it's perfectly fine, there is threads about it somewhere around.  Basically the syrup comes from rice through a special process.

so Janelle, just out of curiosity, what happened to the rule of nothing over 3% of sugar per 100 grams as the general rule not to go over or I have I got it wrong?

Sarah Wilson in her cookbook I quit sugar states "

    rice malt syrup

You can use this in place of sugar or honey in recipes, roughly in a 1:1 ratio (eg 1 cup

for 1 cup). Some folk say it’s less sweet than honey and sugar. I beg to differ…and

have tended to put less of it in my recipes than many would. Perhaps it’s because my

    taste buds have shifted!

I would have to agree, it's just as sweet as honey even sweeter.  Only thing though if your using it for a caramel flavour it's not as strong as say golden syrup, but still good though.

    Hi Rebecca,

I believe the sugar in Rice Malt Syrup is glucose not fructose so it's ok. Thanks goodness, I love it!

    Cheers,
