    Hi everyone,

Just wondering if there are any gravies you can make without sugar in them, foods a little boring without sauce or gravy.

    Thanks

I made a nice roast beef the other week with red wine gravy.  The best gravy is the traditional one you make with juices, however red wine gravy is just 1 cup beef stock, 1/2 cup red wine.  In the pan you used to cook your meat, add 1 tablespoon of flour, cook for a few mintes, add a little of the liquid bit at a time until you've added the lot.  Simmer and stir until thickened.  I don't really use that much gravy or sauces but you can also use cheese sauce and white sauce for some dishes too.  Have a look at the taste website, they may have heaps of good sauce recipes.

I've never much got gravy, so I might not be the person to ask.  However, I think a sweet red wine is sweet because it has sugar in it, sorry :-)

    Hi there,
When I want to have a bit of gravy with a meal I use "White Wings Rich Golden Gravy Mix". It has less than o.1gm per serve or 0.2gms per 100gms. The sugar that is used is Maltodextrin which David has on his list as 'Good'. I add a little cornflour to it to break it down a bit more and be less rich.

The Gravox gravies whether Instant or Powdered one you have to cook, do contain Sugar itself but it states that it is less than 1 gm per serve or 1.0gm per 100ml. So if you had 100mls of gravy on your meal halve that and you would have had 0.5 gms of sugar so depending what else you have eaten in that day would have to see if you are still within the 10gm range of sugar that David recommends is the limit to have per day. What do others think about using Gravox?

I think if I liked gravy, I'd make it myself, but if you want something quick, the question is not just 'how much sugar is in it', but, 'how much do I eat ?'.  If you have a lake of gravy, then that can translate to a lot of sugar, if there's a reasonable % of sugar in there.  I think if you need some gravy to get through your meal, it's not the worst thing in the world, but that would be my general rule of thumb regarding anything that has small amounts of sugar in it.

I don't do a lot of gravy either, but I do stay away from all package gravies now because of the yukky chemicals, etc. Cornflour is a no-no in some books. Can't remember why. I thought it was the sugar or the chemical reaction of what it does in the body. I still use it though, because I don't use much. If I do want gravy, I'd make it from scratch. I found a nice mushroom sauce, but it uses alot of cream, but oh so yummy!

Try Green's Gravy Granules.  They have less than 1g of sugar.  Can be found on the bottom shelf in the gravy section in Woolies.  Makes great lump free thick gravy.
