I buy D'oro Passata Di Pomodoro in a 690g jar. you can find this brand and others on the bottom shelf of the pasta isle in the supermarket. The ingredients are as follows :- fresh tomatoes, salt, acidity regulator which is citric acid. The sugar content is 3.1g per 100g which occurs naturally in the tomatoes :) hope this helps.

Sandy Hobbs wrote:I make my own. I just get a bunch of tomatoes and cook them down slowly for hours. You know you're done when it looks, smells and taste like the paste you buy. I don't skin or seed them...too lazy. I was so amazed at the result, and so easy too. Then if I want tomato sauce/ketchup I just whiz up and add a bit of salt. The skins and seeds just seem to disappear. It's so yummy! Didn't have to add anything else for my taste. You can add what you like to make it what you like. It's not the right time of year to buy them in bulk, but I'm going to grow some this year. Haven't done that in ages.

We grow our own, we grow a lot of things here.  Including lots of fruit :(  We do grow more berries than anything else though, so that is something.  Anyhow, this is really the best solution to every question, for people who have time.  If you make your own, you can use dextrose, or just make it sugar free.

I buy the Leggo's  "Sugo di Pomodoro" which comes in Classic tomato and Italian herb and basil. It is in tall jars on the bottom shelf in the supermarket where you buy the Pasta sauces. It has only 1.3 gms per 100gm of sugar. I use it for all tomato based recipes now and it makes a great sauce. I used the recipe in the Kid's party section of David's recipes and my daughter loves it.
As it doesn't keep like normal tomato sauce I made a large batch and then froze in icecube trays. I then defrost how much I need at a time.

    Hi Bev

Can you please let me know which supermarket you buy your "D'oro Passata Di Pomodoro"  I have been looking for a good low sugar pasta sauce and am going to try and make some myself this weekend.  But a couple of jars in the cupboard for days when you need to get a good meal cooked quickly are very handy.  Spaghetti Bolognese always goes down well in our house but all the better if I can make it fructose free.

    Hi Folks,
I make my own tomato sauce using tinned organic diced Roma tomatoes from Aldi. Excellent product and cheap.
When I want a pizza base sauce I cook the tomato sauce right down to a thick paste having added extra garlic, diced red onion and bazil. You won't find a better tasting pizza base, guaranteed.

    Tomato Sauce:

3 tins organic diced Roma (Italian) tomatoes
1/2 a salad (red) onion diced
    1 tsp sea salt
2 tblsp Rice Malt Syrup (or other sugar sub)
    1 clove garlic (crushed)
    1/2 cup of shreaded bazil
    1 tblsp apple cider vinegar

In a saucepan cook the onion in a tblsp of olive oil for 3 minutes on medium heat.
Add salt and garlic and cook for a further 2 minutes.
Add remaining ingredients and simmer for about 12 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Place the mixture in a food processor and process until smooth.
    Bottle, refrigerate and enjoy.

    For the pizza sauce:

Dice up half a salad onion and cook in a tblsp of olive oil for 3 minutes
Add 2 crushed cloves garlic cook for two minutes
add 1/2 cup shreaded bazil together with 1 1/2 cups of above sauce plus pinch salt and sweetener to taste.
Simmer very slowly (stir often to prevent sticking/burning) until mixture reduced to thick spreadable paste.
As a guide I find I need to cook this mixture for about 1/2 hour or more to get it right.

I buy La Doria Passata from the local fresh food shop.   700gm for 99c  hell cheap.

    Ingrediants

    Tomatoes

    Salt

Sugar content is 3.8g /100 gram  which would be from the tomatoes.

I just use it straight from the bottle, I don't bother mixing dextrose to it and have got used to the taste.    The less sweet you have the less you need or crave

    Hi There,
I made my children tomato sauce using tomatoes, cloves, garlic and simmered with water and a few stevia drops. (Couldn't get dextrose at the time) Anyway they love it.
