dextrose icing sugar

    Has anyone had any success creating dextrose icing sugar?  My sister told me her thermomix (see thermomix.com.au if you don't know what it is) can turn caster sugar into icing sugar.  So I figured I would try to turn dextrose into icing sugar.  I put the dextrose through the machine and have ended up with superfine dextrose.  It isn't as soft/silky in feel as icing sugar, but it's much much finer than when you buy it, or even after grinding it in a mortar and pestle. 

    I haven't tried to make icing with it yet, so I was just wondering if anyone else had done this and whether it needed to be treated differently to icing sugar in order to work?  I've struggled to make fructose-free icing despite the recipes in David's book.

    It worked, it worked!

    The Thermomixed dextrose made excellent icing sugar.  It was pretty much the same as regular icing sugar, much easier to handle and made great icing.  The kids loved it.  Hurrah!!

    My kids loved it too although I didn't bother putting it through thermy as it's already a fine powder anyway so it didn't really need to be blitzed like castor sugar does. They like the hard icing with green colouring and peppermint essence in it :)

    Do you just add water to the dextrose to make the icing?

    I had a specific recipe which called for melted butter, splash of milk and whisk in the icing sugar.  I did this, and it was perfect.  I haven't tried it with just water yet.

    I'll have to try this did it make a soft icing? I used the recipe from the Sweet Poison Quit Plan for the hard icing but soft icing would be nicer :)
