I made these over Easter and they turned out really nice. I did add the sultanas for my husband (but picked them out as I was eating). I have never made buns before, so guess they are fool proof. More spices could be added if you wanted to.
Breadmaker Hot Cross Buns
Cooking Time: 20 min
Serves: 16
Ingredients:
Dough
1 egg
40g margarine
310ml water (I used about ½ milk ½ water)
60g dextrose
¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
¼ teaspoon ground cloves
¼ teaspoon cinnamon
520g plain flour
2 ½ teaspoons dry yeast
¾ cup sultanas
1 tablespoon plain flour, extra
Crosses
80g plain flour
80ml water
1 teaspoon dextrose
Glaze
2 tablespoons water
1 tablespoon dextrose
Method:
1.Place all dough ingredients into bread pan except sultanas and extra flour in the order listed. Place pan into bread machine. Select dough cycle.
2.Toss sultanas in extra flour; place in breadmaker 15 minutes after cycle has started (some breadmakers will have a 15 minute timer).
3.Preheat oven to 200°c. Lightly grease a baking tray.
4.Once cycle has finished; remove dough form breadmaker onto a lightly floured bench top. Lightly knead then divide dough into 16 balls. 5.Place balls close together onto tray; cover and allow to rise in a warm place for 30 minutes.
6.Combine flour, water and sugar to make paste for crosses. Place paste in a piping bag and pipe crosses onto each bun.
7.Bake in oven for 20-25 minutes or until golden.
8.Meanwhile, combine water and dextrose in a microwave jug and heat on Medium for 1-2 minutes or until warm. Brush over hot buns.
