It has been 2 years next month since I started my sugar free way of life. During that time my cholesterol readings have gone through the roof. Even after all this time of eating full fat everything, I still feel concerned if I am doing the right thing. I don't have a problem with anything else but I just cant get my cholesterol levels down. Everything else is fine, perfect blood pressure, not over weight, sugar is good, but its just the cholesterol. The "good level has improved but the "bad" is getting higher and higher.

My Dr. has reached for the script pad and basically told me that she is advising me to take the tablets (statins) but it is my choice. I must admit, as much as I don't want to go that that track, I am getting a bit nervous to say the least.

I realize no one can advise me on this decision but I was just wondering if anyone else has had this problem while on this sugar free journey.

The only other possibility is that maybe I am eating too much of the full fat products. I eat a lot of nuts also. And I do like to bake etc. etc.  Also maybe I need to exercise more although I do walk 3 to 4 times a week. Just feeling a bit disheartened and unsure at the moment.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. :)

    Cheers

    Lynn

Hi Lynette I have not had a blood test done this year for cholesterol, but I was in the high area last year, but am the same as you not at risk because not excessively over weight non smoker etc, Its hard to know what is the best thing to do my other half has given me a hard time for not getting it checked but I have no intention of taking tablets for it, because depending on what you read about it or who you believe, how do you really know what your natural cholesterol level is anyway. As long as your good stuff is up there I would say don't stress because that could be worst than the high number. Just out of interest it was my Doc that mention sugar being as bad as fat for cholesterol which led me to Davids book.

    Hi Debra

Many thanks for your input. I agree with you about who do you believe. I have read so many contradictory reports about cholesterol and taking statins that I can no longer think straight. My Doctor doesn't want to know about the sugar free idea or anything else it seems. I did begin taking the statins again but I am not at all happy about it. In two minds weather to continue or not. I guess I am just scared that if I don't I will end up having a stroke or heart attack. I have come to the conclusion that I will take them for 3 months until my cholesterol comes down to a more acceptable level and then I will stop taking statins and seriously watch the amount of food I am eating. And bump up the exercise a bit :)

Not the end of the world I guess. Just a bit frustrating having a Doctor that is so one eyed.

Thanks again Debra. It is good to get another opinion on the subject.

    All the best

    Hi Lynette,

I recently have had  blood tests done and relieved to see my cholesterol  ratio was down. I have not only been sugar free but also wheat free since January. To me they go hand in hand. I also have been eating/drinking full fat products, so was relieved to find my overall cholesterol was down. I eat a handful of nuts everyday as well. I wasn't overweight, but have lost 5kgs since January.  'Sweet poison' and 'Wheat Belly' by William Davis have changed my life. I no longer have cravings for food. When you cut out sugar and wheat from your diet you surprisingly feel satiated and don't feel the need to snack.

Before you take a prescription medication try cutting out wheat! It's not that bad, and I am sure you will be pleased with the results. Just like you adjusted to a life without sugar, you can adjust to a life without wheat. I adored almond croissants! I look at them now, and feel nothing. It's hard to explain, but when you are no longer addicted to sugar and wheat it's easy.  All the best Lynette!

    Hi Sue

Many thanks for your input re cholesterol. Just saying to my husband that I am getting myself so confused that I don't know which way to think.

I will have a look at the wheat situation. Never occurred to me before. I just felt it was coming from the "full fat" everything but then I am not gaining weight from that, so I give up really. Must be doing something wrong but I honestly cant figure it out. So disappointing when I read that other people have had such good results and are doing the same thing. :(

Oh well, I will keep trying.  I have increased the amount of walking and trying to do more active.

Will certainly check out the going wheat free as well. :)

    Thanks again.

    Hi Sue, Lynette

I have been reading an playing about with the no wheat thing but just cant push myself to give up bread entirely, Sue what do you eat ? are you still having rice or has that gone as well, I read Marks daily apple site an have the wheat belly on kindle, but I did body trim for about 2 years with zero results lost 5kg put it back on did this for the whole 2 years than gave up a few kilos heavier than when i started. And its made me really reluctant to give up grains again, as like you Lynette I have not put any weight on since being sugar free but I have only lost about 2kg in the year i've been doing it. I wish I had known about the sugar during that time the results might have been very different.
    cheers Deb

    Hi Debra

Did have a look on web about the wheat free idea and did actually order the book. Will wait until it arrives and I have a good look at it before I decide what to do.

Feel that I have enough on my plate just giving up sugar/fructose and avoiding all the bad oils at the moment. But I will have a read and then form an opinion. :)

    All the best.

For anyone who is concerned about the level of cholesterol in their blood, I suggest that, apart from David's books, they read The Great Cholesterol Deception by Peter Dingle and  The Fat Revolution   by Christine Cronau.  There is little or no correlation between cholesterol levels and risk of CVD.  Most people who die of a heart attack have LOW  total cholesterol.  The real villain is inflammation of the arteries, which is mainly caused by the Toxic Oils  David Gillespie writes about. Omega-3 and Omega-6 (essential) fatty acids should be properly balanced. But we in Australia  eat many times the amount of Omega-6 to omega-3  than we should to prevent inflammation.  And where do you find it?  No prizes for guessing processed foods and fast food. It comes in seed oils which are cheaper and more "proper" than animal fats.
