I am day 3 of cold turkey sugar/alcohol/caffeinne free.

When eating out, how do I know  am making the right food choices?

I am going out for lunch with friends to the local pizza/pasta place. what is my best option to choose for lunch?

Also, when having a coffee/tea at a  cafe, is there anything I should /can be snacking on while i am out as I often need breakie on the run?

Any suggestions would be appreciated x

    Hi Melinda,

I was wondering the same thing, actually. My husband and I were going to go out last night but I suddenly thought "isn't there heaps of sugar in all the chinese food I normally eat?" and decided to eat at home instead. It's hard to know when you can't read the ingredients (unless your favourite food is sweet and sour chicken - then you just know!)..

Let me know if you come up with any solutions :)

ps: good luck with your cold turkey - I'm up to day 3 - though i'm not sure how I'm going .. I had 150g of baked beans yesterday.. I worked out the fructose must have been something like 5g maybe.. I'm not sure if I should have had them but I didn't want to 'waste' them. Next time maybe I'll freeze the leftovers for hubby. Speaking of which.. does anyone have a good homemade recipe for baked beans? I have the beans cooked and ready to go (in the freezer!).. I just need to work out how to make the sauce..

When I go Chinese next time I'll be getting a dish that we sometimes get that is a soup but it's a whole meal.  It's called Combination Short and Long Soup.  It's in with the soups on the menu (at most Chinese places I've been to) and it's huge.  It's like a chicken stock type clear soup with long and short noodles but it also has different meats and seafood and veges in it.  It doesn't taste sweet at all.

We went out to a Chinese restaurant, and I asked what was sugar free, and MSG free, my only option was vegetable omlet, or stir fry veges, both without sauce.  The omlet was lovely.  Evidentally all the meat, including the fish is pre sprinkled with MSG earlier in the day.

Hi, everybody, my contribution to this topic is to direct you to this link, here:-

    http://www.sarahwilson.com.au/category/recommendations/

This is Sarah Wilson's blog, where she got some real nutritionists together, (the ones who know all about sugar) and asked them what they do when eating out. plus she adds her own tips from her 'always on the move' life, lots of travel involved. As well as sugar free, she is Gluten intolerant, so she has this topic, plus lots of recipes she's found & developed herself, makes interesting reading, especially for you people who have to go out & eat sometimes.

Good luck with it all......hope you're all having a great long-weekend....
