BUT i found a recipe for taco seasoning that has NO sugar in it!!!  http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/taco-seasoning-i/detail.aspx  Havn;t tried it YET, but will sure give it a go in the very near future!! Yay!! Was also suprised at how much sugar in tomato paste......any alternate suggestions?

I just use the taco seasoning and the tomato paste (in other dishes, not tacos) as the amount spread through the whole taco wouldn't be that much.

For example, one Old El Paso beef taco, made as directed, is 2.4g per 108g taco, and some of that would be the lactose from the cheese.

Thanks Lisa, I also looked for sugar free taco seasoning on the web and have been using it for several months now, it seems to taste just the same, wonder why they put sugar in it at all!
    cheers

Thanks for that Nadine, i was thinking that myself actually, by the time you put it in the mince, youwould be getting very little sugar, with the tomato paste too.  Think i will do the same :) Ta

Ardmona tomatoe paste is sugar free, 3.2%, that's from the tomatoes

Using small amounts spread through 500 gms mince wouldn't be much per serve

I use a tin of tomatoes chopped or crushed and a tin of tomatoe puree

Use dextrose powder to sweeten it as sometimes the tomatoes are a bit tart

Tomatoe puree doesn't have added sugar but the crushed one does so look for something with no added sugar

You could use the same amount with a kg of mince and it would be less on your plate

Discovered there is too much sugar in the Ardmona crushed tomatoes will have to check the other brands

Woolworths Select Taco seasoning is very low in sugar so is the one to use

Also I use Burritos instead of the corn shells, our family loves them and the sugar level is less than the others

I have dinner with my family generally once per week, and they quite like tacos.  I actually took the taco mix packet to the spice section, and bought all the different spices that were listed on the taco mix packet, and a bottle of passata (there's an italian brand I like which is only about 1% sugar), and then put the taco mix back.  Cooked up the mince, didn't measure anything, just chucked the spices in.  My brother likes to put refried beans in the mince, which makes it nice and thick, but contains barely any sugar.  Literally tasted just like normal taco mince, and took no longer to cook than regular taco mix.

One thing I have learnt that often times it's just as quick and easy to make something from scratch as it is to buy prepackaged mixes, and it's good because its often fresher, tastes better and you know whats in it.  Plus once you have the ingredients, you can make it again.

As for tin tomatoes, I've bought Annalisa italian diced tomatoes for ages, it's 3% sugar, and only contains tomatoes and tomato juice.  Its the only one I've been able to find that doesn't have excess ingredients and preservatives added to it.

    Hi lisa
I downloaded the taco recipe looks good, my family love taco and like you hate using packet stuff.
    Can't wait to try it.
If it is a success I will post the recipe as well so the word can be spread.
    Thanks
