Hi - I am new at this.  Is there a rule of thumb for how much or how little sugar to look for on a nutrition panel? Obviously 0% is what we are after but there are some products where it just seems to be unavoidable!

    Thanks  Michelle

I think there is a lot of factors involved, firstly I think it depends on what the product is and what type of sugar is in the ingredient list.  Basically when I'm looking for something I'll look at the ingredient list first to see what type of sugar is used.  If it contains any of the safe sugars then I'll be happy to get it, if it contains any of the your call I may get it.  If it contains any sugar or anything on the bad list then I'll basically see how much it is per 100g and look at the serving size (i'm usually happy with about 3-4g per serving, but it depends on the serving size), and where abouts on the ingredient list the sugar is (like it's it's listed third) but again you have to take into account any lactose if it's a dairy product.  So it's really confusing, there is so much you need to consider. But never fear, it gets easier reading labels!

    Hi Michelle,

The sugar amount to look for is less than 5grams per 100grams. I actually go for under 3grams per 100 grams. Unless it's plain dairy, nothing added, which I have freely. Lactose will show up as sugars but they don't count towards things we need to avoid.

a little bit daunting at the beginning, but it gets easier. The total amount of sugar is 3grms per 100grm on the nutrition panel .Anything less is great but nothing higher. Dairy is different , as it is lactulose. This can be 5grms /100. Same with nuts .
