To quote the famous Smith's Weekly cartoon "don't laugh, this is serious" :-)
I recently had a double inguinal hernia repair operation using keyhole surgery. So just three little 4cm incisions down the cenrtreline below the navel. BUT while they are healing you have to avoid coughing, sneezing, reaching . .  anything which strains the abdominal muscles. Including straining to poo! After four days I  was getting desperate with laxatives and Metamucil doing nothing. Until the doctor suggested prune juice. Whammy! Problem solved. Sugar content is about 9% so you wouldn't want to make a habit of it.

Thought you'd like to know, just in case you ever need to :-)

I began to wonder about the sugar content of Metamucil. After some prompting I  elicited the following information from Proctor & Gamble. A dose is two teaspoonfuls and the recommended dosage is three per day. So . . 10.8g of sugar or 5.4g of fructose per day. I've been taking two doses. No wonder I've been putting on a bit of weight!  Natural Psillium Husks from the health-food store will be the way to go I  reckon.

I've forgotten what; but the smooth versions are not good for you and anyway, they contain aspartame.

Thank you for contacting us once again at Procter & Gamble regarding Metamucil.
We always welcome feedback from our consumers as a means of assessing attitudes toward our products and service. We are glad to have the opportunity to respond to your concerns.
We have several products that do not contain sugar. Metamucil Fibrecaps do not have any sugar in them. Metamucil Smooth Texture Orange, Lemon Lime and Wild Berry contains no sugar as well. It contains sweetener called Aspartame whish is Nutrasweet.
On the other hand, Metamucil Granular Texture contains sugar. Metamucil Granular Texture Original Flavor has 3.6g/dose of sugar and the Granular Texture Orange Flavor has 7.1g/dose of sugar.

John, I hope you're all better now & the op worked. I know all about hernia ops, my partner was born with 'baby hernias' and has had a lifetime of problems. Not long after we met, he had to go into hosp to have them fixed once again. They wanted to chuck him out after 2 days, but he couldn't walk properly & we lived on the second floor, heaps of steps!!  They let him stay 6 days, I think it was. That was about 16 or so years ago. The op worked well, but any hard physical work he does results in a lot of aching there. I well remember the other problem , but can't now remember what we did for it. Was a long time ago.
Good research and tips, thanks for that.
    Merry Christmas, John,
