Ok so I went down to the supermarket and bought a heap of new food to replace the 98% of the stuff that had to be thrown out.  Im a little confused though.  You look for foods which don't include sugar in the ingredients right and also look at the sugar content and make sure its under 3g per 100g serve.  So I went to buy whole fat egg mayo and they all had sugar in their ingredients so I don't know if im doing it wrong or what?  also same with nuts etc no added sugar but sugar per 100g was way over 3g.  Please clarify with this newb!

Nuts do have sugar in them.  But, just like fruit, if you eat a little, it's OK, because of how much fibre etc you get, and how much you'd have to eat to end up with huge amounts of sugar.  If the book says a food is OK, check the ingredients list.  If all that's in the bag is nuts, then it's OK, because nuts are OK, and the sugar you see, is just in the nuts.  That's probably always going to be true ( unless the nuts are in rocky road and that's bad :P ), but that's a general rule of thumb.  If your yoghurt contains milk and culture, it has no added sugar and the sugar you see, is lactose in the milk, for example.

On the other hand, if the book says 'whole egg mayo is often OK', that doesn't mean you just buy any whole egg mayo, it means if you want to check to buy a mayo, you look through the whole egg ones.  The easiest solution with sauces is to make your own.  It's also a ton cheaper.  I read once that the food industry could not believe it when they found people would pay a premium for pre made sauces and salad dressings, b/c they are so easy to make at home.

But does it have polyunsaturated fat in it.  I have just read Big fat lies, David's third book and he says to avoid trans fats as well as sugar.  Which cuts a lot of other foods out as well.  Must check out the Kraft mayo next time!
