How Much Sugar?

Where do we find a medical practitioner who accepts the Sweet Poison and Big Fat Lies stories?

I am quite disillusioned with the medical profession in Australia, at least the ones we have been in contact with who are still caught up on the low fat recipe for health.
Does anyone know a doctor in Brisbane (north side) who accepts the Sweet Poison and Big Fat Lies stories.
I have lost 17KG by cutting out sugar and after many years, my Type 2 diabetes is almost licked.   As my weight has come down so has my control of my blood sugars improved.   I am down from 5 different medications to 1.  And my blood sugar is now mostly in the normal range.
Watching the U-tube video of Dr Robert Lustig is a real eye opener and confirms much in David's recipe for weight loss and healthy living.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBnniua6-oM&feature=related

We were very fortunate [ in Wauchope,NSW ] to have an holistic doctor . .  until he had a stroke and had to retire :-(

I don't know of any  holistic doctors in the Brisbane  area. But I do know of  a practice known as "your health".  This was originally based in Manly, NSW but has expanded to Melbourne  and Brisbane.   http://www.yourhealth.com.au/
I know of a number of "miraculous" cures people have experienced, and my wife has had very good experience of the Manly branch. I think this is probably your best bet to find a doctor who, if not a believer in the role of fructose in health, will at least view it with an open mind.

Let us know how you get on. Congratulations on your achievements. You will be an inspiration to some of the members here who are discouraged by the slow progress they have experienced.

Hi sorry I cant help you with a doctor(i'm in W.A) but well done on getting your health back.
I 'm hoping for good results on my next cholesterol test, my Doc did mention to me that i had to watch sugar which led me to Davids books in a round about way.

Thanks for your responses.   One has to wonder why it takes a member of the public (David) to come up with the solution to Australia's obesity epidemic and why the medical profession is not endorsing it much more.

I think the basic reason is that they are afraid to step outside the "establishment" dogma in case they get sued for malpractice. Also, they don't like having their cages rattled.  They also rely heavily on the official organizations like the Heart Foundation, Nutritionists Association, Diabetes Association etc.  If you read David's blog you will see that these people have a lot of their research funded by Big Pharma . . sort of like having the fox in charge of the chicken run perhaps.

Good luck in finding a "reasonable" doctor.

My doctor is typical of the "shut eye" brigade too.

Maybe you could do what I do, let him do all your tests and give you the results. And then I thank him.
I did sound him out on the fructose free way, but he just changed the subject and when I told him I had lost weight simply by stopping sugar, he didn't believe me.
I don't talk about what I do now, he is too difficult...........I use him to make sure my body is ok and then leave.
    cheers

Here is a copy of an email that I received when trying to increase awareness of the sugar problem.  It shows that there is opposition to this concept right up at the higher levels of academia.

I am very familiar with the writings of David Gillespie and Robert Lustig. I have some sympathy with their views, but in general, I am of the persuasion that for every complex problem there is a solution which is simple, elegant but wrong. The issues are much more complex than fructose since the whole world is getting fat and not just the US where there is a lot of high fructose corn syrup used. Congratulations on losing the weight and fir individuals the main issue is what works for them to keep calories down – and there are many way to do this, low sugar and low fat and many things in between.

    Cheers

    Hi Professor Swinburn,

In todays Herald you are quoted "Policies and interventions are urgently needed to reduce the prevalence of obesity, thereby decreasing these substantial costs.". Does your research include the effects that sugar - more correctly fructose is having on our increasing obesity.

I read David Gillespie's book '"Big Fat Lies how the diet industry is making you sick, fat and poor", this has lead me onto cutting out sugar and losing 10kg in four months. Having seen the effects of this I have been encouraging a number of people to cut out sugar. I would like to continue to extend the message to more people but have difficulty with the Medical profession who continue the message that we must have a low fat diet.

There is a very interesting youtube video of a presentation by Robert Lustig MD from UCSF about sugar.

I have attached the slides from the presentation as the detail does not show up well.

Are there any factual errors in his presentation?

Yep, as I said, they don't like having their cages rattled. I guess that one thing he says is right . .  if it works for you, go for it :-)

How anyone could be a doubter after watching Lustig's lecture is beyond me. I'd bet London to a brick he didn't watch it . .  or read any of David's books.

You may find a practitioner reasonably close from this list.

Thanks for the reference.  I will follow up on these and see what transpires.

    Something really interesting:
My wife and I have experienced an interesting consequence of going COMPLETELY cane sugar and honey free.   Previously, we had cut out most of these but not completely.

Out appetite has been reducing quote dramatically after about 2 months and after a lull in weight loss suddenly our downward trend has started again.  We would both still like to drop about 10kg!
