    Hi Emily,

Eight weeks and a little bit. No weight loss and until today have been SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO good. Today I found it all too hard and had an icecream!

We will see what tomorrow brings,

    Good luck

How much weight are you trying to lose ladies?  Not to pry, but the smaller the amount the slower it goes (in my experience).

Removing sugar works because it resets appetite control but for some people that takes much longer than others (see p117 of the book for a case study from Marita on this point).  I found whenever I got stuck (and impatient) that a week or two of low-carb - then returning to just no sugar - worked wonders.

    Cheers

    David.

Hi, i actually don't have a lot to lose probably 5-10 kilos at the most and i do agree its takes longer if you don't have much to lose, but yes i get impatient.

We could write volumes on this subject couldn't we.  I too have been finding it a bit frustrating but am persevering.  My problem is that I have been weighing myself too often and every day was different, sometimes up a kilo or so then down yo yo-ing so have decided to leave it a week between weighs.

I am aiming at a 20kg loss and to date am down 2kgs which I am pleased with and hope at my next weigh-in will be down some more.

So keep at it girls, it will happen!!

    Cheers Margaret

    Hi David
I am  in the "mature ladies" age bracket and I believe this group has the most difficult time trying to lose weight! I know it is hard for all groups and ages and I may be wrong in that but from the evidence around me this does appear to be a huge problem for this group of women. Instead of weight loss it is more like "waist loss" that applies and as you say in your book this is due to the lack of oestrogen maybe.
What are your suggestions to specifically help our age group and when you say that you go lo-carb, to help in moving the body on to accepting a sugar free program, what foods do you suggest? do you move totally to meat and veg? and for how long do you suggest following this process?
    Thanks again
    Bev

    Hi Emily,

I have also been six weeks sugar free with only half a kilo weight loss.   I have been dissapointed in this even though I now no longer crave sugar and my appetite has decreased considerably.  I have in the past gone low carb and have been very successful with quick weight loss but you end up not being able to have bread, pasta, potatoes etc, and after a while I just found it too restrictive. But I have decided to cut back on my carbs as David suggests and see how I go.  I want to continue with this cos I am feeling better but I just have to be patient.  Keep going Emily we have to lose it eventually.

    Lauren.

    Hi Everyone,

Great book David, thanks for the wisdom!

I am still new to this site, and only started the sugar free program last Sunday (29/08).  However, I am somewhat intrigued by the "no weight loss" reports, by some members who have been on the program for many weeks.  I am already down almost 2kgs, in only 4 days. However, I don't believe I am doing anything extraordinary. I follow the eating program carefully, cut out ALL unnecessary sugars, and carefully monitor my daily carb intake.  With regards to fruits and veg's, I consume only the daily recommended (e.g. no more than 2 pieces of fruit) and try to keep to those varieties that are lowest in fructose. I am not eating between, meals, and always carry bottled water with me.

In the past my spouse and I have often enjoyed sweet after dinner treats, so this time of day is still a challenge, however, we get around it by getting into a good DVD, or just do something that keeps us otherwise busy.  I also have a rule that I try to live by and that is no food after 9pm.

With weight loss, I have also always worked on the simple theory that when energy in (sugars and carbohydrates) is less than energy out the body uses it's energy reserves (fat) for it's energy needs = weight loss.

I also maintain that some form of regular daily exercise not only helps to keep us in good shape, but also maintains weight and assists with weight loss.  I have a sheltie so I have to walk most days, but when it's just too cold or wet, I use our treadmill.

A suggestion for those women who are menopausal or premenopausal and may be struggling with 'abdominal' weight they are finding difficult to move. You may wish to consider discussing this with a Lymphatic Massage Therapist. He/she may be able to provide some helpful insight. Our lymph systems are amazing and they are complex, and like many of our body systems, it too can suffer as a result of illness, bad eating habits, lack of exercise etc. and eventually stop working as efficiently. Lymphatic massage can sometimes offer good physiological results in these situations.

    cheers,

    Colleen

    Hi All,

I too am a newbie - I have been sugar free for 6wks now.  I weighted myself for the first time last wk and have lost only 1.7kg, however aside from the weight, I have lost 7cm off my waist and 1cm off hips.

I have only really come to realise this wk that I need to pay better attention to my appetite, found out the hard way that over eating or trying to squeeze in a snack when it is not really needed can leave you feeling quite uncomfortable for a couple of hours.

I am trying to cut down on portion size, though it seems strange to only be able to eat a meal that would fit onto a bread plate (my 5yr old eats more)!

My point being - over the first 6wks - I was mainly eating more than I required (still less than before I started, but more than I should have) and I think this has slowed my weight loss down, not to mention I tend to be filling up on carbs first and it is only now that my appetite control has (I believe) truly kicked in, that I have to stop eating as soon as I feel I am full.

So hang in there everyone - it will happen, I am not quite sure if the withdrawal period is over just yet, but changes are definitely happening :)

FYI - during first 6wks, my exercise was 1hr sessions 2 x p/w and nothing more than looking after my kids and general house work.  I also embelished in some of the sweet receipes (ice cream is yummy), but from wk one, I could feel the clothes getting looser.

    :) Deb

    Hi All

I have been sugar free since 9th July and have lost about 4 kilos. I feel good and need to lose another 5 or so but am happy so far.

I have always been a bit obsessed about my weight starting from early teens (mid thirties now) and judging by a lot of the comments, and without meaning to be sexist, I think it's a female thing. We should all just chill out about the weight loss part and be sugar free so that we feel well and energised.

Before reading David's book, I had accepted my weight gain as part of being a Mum of small kids. I am now excited that I should be able to get back to my pre-baby weight without too much effort as I am now the weight I was when I was 12 weeks pregnant with my 1st child.

I have always managed at least 2 exercise sessions per week consistently but aim to fit in at least 3. Now that I am sugar free, I am feeling like when I exercise I am actually burning fat rather than just maintaining my weight.  Another tip from a friend was to eat 1 hour after exercise for maximum effect, so I have been trying that too.

Fingers crossed we all achieve out goals
    Sharon

P.S. Is anyone else concerned about Christmas and Easter and all those temptations? I don't crave sugar anymore but some of those treats still looks appealing.
