No added sugar...yet high sugar on the NIP

I've got another label conundrum.  We had an organic spelt chicken & vege pie for dinner, and it has no added sugar, but has 15g sugar/100g.

The ingredients are:  Organic wholemeal spelt flour, seat salt, filtered water, pepper, organic carrot, organic chicken, non-hydronated palm oil, organic unsalted butter, organic onion.

So is this ok or not?  And why is the sugar so high?  Is it because it has carbohydrates in it?

Can you ignore the grams of sugar/100g if you are sure there is no fructose in it?

    Thanks in advance.

Off hand, Lara, I would say it's the carrot and onion that is adding to the sugar content. Onions particularly go quite sweet when cooked long enough. The amount of sugar in something isn't an issue unless it's fructose. If you wanted you could have 90gms dextrose to 100gms of food weight, it's just it wouldn't be healthy for you. It's only the fructose that has to be kept to 10gms or less per 100. Michelle
