I have recently discovered Pure Harvest Rice Malt Syrup in Coles. My husband still struggles with unsweetened coffee and he finds that adding a half teaspoon of this syrup is quite tasty. I have also used it in cooking and it is nice just spread on toast too (nicer than honey in my opinion).

The label reads "...contains soluble complex carbohydrates, maltose and a small amount of glucose."

I have recommended it to friends and they all love it too

    Hi,

Yes I have recently found this too. Any food that is fructose free, like museli bars uses this as a sweetner.

I can't seem to find anywhere that David has commented on this as a sweetner and how it is converted in the body though. I would be interested to hear his view on this.

I hope that it is okay in moderation as a sweetner, but would like to know more about it.

At the moment, it is nice (on occasion) as an alternative to honey. :)

Hi, Shirley, I too discovered Rice Malt Syrup when I attempted to make David's Anzac biscuits.  Also, with a little prompting from Bron, tried it on my porridge. It's terrific on the porridge, and the first time I used it, I used far too much. Now I put 1 teaspoon on the bottom of the dish, add the porridge, then another small teaspoon on top, cream & a little muesli, wow! so yummy....
With regard to sweetener alternatives, I found this holistic site, I thought you may be interested in, link here:-

I must say, I like the combo of Stevia & Xylitol. I currently am using Natvia, but find it quite expensive. Have also priced the Xylitol, boy is it dear!!  Look at this blog, from Sarah Wilson,  lots of info on here, too. L

I find this a very interesting & informative site, like sweet Poison & How much sugar.

Good luck with it all.  I've not found any bad stuff about RMS, so go for it.

Great tip for having it in coffee, too, thanks for that. Just never thought of it. Am trying to give up the coffee, but seems the only way to do this is to go cold turkey.  I like a latte now & then, I got down to one every 5 days, then blew it & had 2, two days in a row. (!).

I too found this in Coles the other day because to my dismay they no longer stock glucose syrup. So good to be able to let my children have something sweet on odd occasions. My son, Master 6 thought it was very yummy on toast.

So nice to find a product that ticks all the boxes. Another one I found was Aldi's Bakers Life Sunny crumpets. The ingredients lists dextrose and total sugars is 1.8g per 100g serve.

Toasted crumpets with butter and Rice malt syrup here I come!!!

Tara, the Golden Crumpet brand is also fructose free (has dextrose), and comes in wholemeal too, but that's a bit hard to find.
