Rice syrups can be used in place of white sugar in recipes. To substitute rice syrup for regular sugar in recipes, for every 1 cup of sugar use 1 1/4 cups of rice syrup and decrease the liquid by 1/4 cup. It can also be used in place of maple syrup or corn syrup.

What section at coles.  With sugars?

Sounds like a nice alternative.  What would it be like instead of honey on toast??

It is in the health foods section, hard to find sometimes. It is really nice on toast, and crumpets.

Wouldn't commercial crumpets have sugar in them?

No, Golden Crumpets do not have added sugar.

Also not sure if Rice Syrup is the same as Rice Malt Syrup.  I know Coles has Rice Malt Syrup, but Woolworhs does not.

At Coles the Rice Bran Syrup is less expensive than buying the Glucose syrup so I'm going to give it a go now I know it's ok.

Does anyone know what it tastes like?

It is hard to describe what it tastes like but my granddaughter is happy to have it on porridge instead of honey. It isnt as strong as honey. I use it also in a hoisin honey ribs recipe for my slow cooker which is my husband's favourite at the moment.

In Franklins I have found Saunders Malt Extract which is extracted from barley not rice.

    Here you go:

    The original recipe is here:

    http://thecakemistress.com/blog/f...arrot-cake-cream-cheese-frosting/

and the alterations to it are:
    * replace the cup of sugar with 1 1/4 cups of rice malt syrup
    * reduce the oil by 1/4 of a cup
    * add an extra 1/4 tsp of baking soda.

For the frosting, the recipe I used was from this site:

    http://www.philadelphiacreamchees...never-thought-of-philly-with.aspx

    Alterations are:
    * replace the icing sugar with dextrose 1:1.
    * leave out the lemon if you like (it's still awesome without it).

    It turned out beautifully!

Lara, I looked up the website for the frosting, not sure if it's the right one, is it the Philly website? If so, there are several frosting recipes, can you click on the right one then copy the link for me, please, sounds like you did a great job of substitution.  I tried the Rice Malt Syrup in the Anzac biscuits they tasted great, tho' they were too hard, and didn't spread (!) even my partner loved them & he is still not fructose free yet. My baking powder was inactive, being several years old, I suppose it would be!!! ooops!!
But they tasted great. & that's all that matters. I love carrot cake, so will make this, I think even my DB will make this, if I weigh all the stuff out for him!!
    Thanks Lara
