Kylie, lactose (milk sugar) is fine (if you're not LI of course). If you're of a culture that has been consuming dairy post weaning, you'll retain the enzyme (lactase) responsible for the digestion of the sugar. Many cultures don't eat dairy after weaning (cos we're not actually supposed to consume the milk of another mammal) and that population becomes LI.

Lactose is very different to fructose. It is essential for normal brain development in humans. Our milk has the highest lactose content of all mammals, cos we have the biggest brains :)

With regards to how much sugar in foods you've bought - you still have to watch how much you're eating overall, over the day. If you have 10 items with 3% each, that may be a lot of sugar you eat.

Thanks Bron, i'm obviously doing something wrong as it's been 3 weeks and I haven't lost any weight. I'll review what i'm having, but I didn't think I was having too much sugar. I was having more dairy and fat than I normally have.
So do I take it that the right hand column is supposed to be 3 grams or less and not 6???

Rodney, I'm just about to make your day!!  NOT!!!  I Googled it, & here is the link for you to read, here:-

    http://www2b.abc.net.au/science/k2/stn/archives/archive88/newposts/1540/topic1540483.shtm

Just don't ever drink it with cola!!  lol

    SMILE!!

PS Oooops, I didn't read far enough down that forum, sorry, Rodney, but apparently it has molasses in it & that's high in sugar. Now I feel awful.  (sad face! lol)  I left it as it was written first so you'd see just how anyone can get fooled. I stuck the 'not' in there not sure why, but just to let you know how bad I feel. You'll have to find something else, to drink. How about a nice dry white?

Kylie, whether or not you eat an item with 3% sugar or fructose depends on what else you have eaten for the day. If you've only had protein and complex carbs (ie veges), you'd be fine with the food with the sugar/frucose. But if you've had cereal, and a sandwich with fruit only jam, and an apple, and some homemade dextrose biscuits, plus some sauce on a hot dog, that food with the 3% may not be a good idea after all. Your daily limit probably shouldn't exceed 10g fructose.

Weight loss may be delayed or stopped if you're consuming too many simple carbs. The other forum has a very interesting thread on leptin and its role in weight loss. Sugar free may be the starting point to weight loss and better health but it may well be our way of eating has stuffed up our bodies so much that we need to return to our cave dwelling ancestors diet to fix it.

Can anybody help with a good recipe for a smoothie. I leave for work about 6.30 and  enjoy my smoothie in the car , but am getting sick of strawberries in it .
Any ideas on other fruit, all the ones i have looked at in the shops the berries (frozen ) are way to high in sugar : eg 7.5 per 100 grms. Thanks.

Here is a site that shows a visual of how much sugar in drinks/foods
     http://www.sugarstacks.com/
There are links further down the page for snacks etc.  It is American, but should give some idea of the amount of sugar you consume if eating these foods.  Good to show children the actual amount of sugar they are eating.
