Hey, Bruna, welcome to the forum, & congrats on making the decision to change your life.
The first column on the left is the percentage of fructose in the fruit, the second, (shaded) one is the percentage of sugar, no teaspoons involved. I think you will find that when David talks about percentages, he means percentage of sugar or fructose per 100 grams of the product, whatever it is. Looking at the chart then we are looking at the fruits with the most fibre, and the least fructose and /or sugar, so anything on or below the '3' line on the left is considered ok, but the further to the right it is, the more fibre it has.
Does that make sense? I hope so, not sure if I could explain it another way !! lol.....
When you are looking at packaging on more processed foods, you should be looking at the far right hand column, the 'per 100 gram (or mls) of the product, looking down to the sugars, take your eye over to that far right column and if it shows more than '6', then consider not buying it. But do look in the ingredients list, to see if there are any added sugars, or if the sugar is from lactose, in which case, it's ok. EG. a can of tomatoes may show a high percentage of sugars, but if the ingredients show only tomatoes, then that's ok, as they are naturally sweet. Just don't go using 2 tins in a small dish you are cooking, one would be enough.
It's a bit tricky, but you will soon get used to it. Practise makes perfect. Print out a copy of the different additives, ie, sweeteners, and keep in your wallet/purse, so you can refer to it. Mind you, it's pretty easy, I think. Stevia & Xylitol are the only sweeteners I would use. Natvia is made from Stevia, but developed for coffee drinkers, I find that Stevia has a bit of an aftertaste. But I guess the thing is to give up all sugar/sweeteners right at the beginning, try to give up the coffee/tea etc until you can cope with the taste of it without anything sweet in it. It's taken me about 17 months to give up coffee, because I didn't commit at the beginning. This is all with the benefit of hindsight, really, but I guess it all comes down to how much you really want to change.
In about 13 months, I lost 19 kilos, and have been stuck since then. I need now to cut out simple carbs for a few weeks, to kick start it again, I'm finding it a bit difficult. I guess my cravings will go away after a bit, I hope......as I have another 20 kilos to lose...sigh....
I wish you well on your journey, any more questions, just ask, & keep us up to date with your progress, so we can continue to encourage you.......lots of lovely helpful people here & over on the Sweet Poison Forum only too willing to help you with the benefit of their experiences to date, there is always someone who is having similar problems, believe me......lol....
