    Hello everyone,
Just a question about the meal replacement shakes as I need to shift a few kilos and the commercial ones have a lot of sugar.  Does anyone have a thought about making my own maybe with yoghurt, milk  etc.  Thanks Catherine

There are a few people who are following sweet poison who do protein shakes, these maybe for you.  You do need to check ingredients as some contain sugar, however there are some available that contain artifical sweeteners if you are happy to take them.  Go down to your local healthfood shop (or even large chemists like Chemist Warehouse stock protein powders), remember to check ingredients and compare them to David's Sugar Guide as some protein powders also contain inulin (which is on David's bad list.

Hi, I was also using protein shakes in the beginning, but after reading the labels I found they all contain Inulin, which is on the bad list. Someone suggested 180 natural protein superfoods. So I went to their site and had a look. there are no artificial flavours, added sugar, preservatives. 100% natural and Aust NZ grown.Their website is www.180nutrition.com.au
They have sample packs you can purchase to try, they are $12.95 and delivered within a few days.
You will find  that when you eliminate the sugars you won't feel hungry, or need to have the protein shakes. That's what I found. The 180 you can add to recipes, or sprinkle on breakfast, or just have as a shake. I found them very nice and filling.
    Good luck

Thanks for that girls.  I will have a look but really wondered if anyone had actually made up their own with "good" things. Catherine

    Hi Catherine
well, you could make one up with your own ingredients............like full cream milk, ground flaxseed, ground almonds, coconut oil, yoghurt, a few berries, (dextrose.........if you want it sweet, but you shouldn't need it.) cinnamon, and so on.
    cheers

I can't recall what the effective ingredient is but the whole point of meal-replacement shakes is that they swell in your stomach and stop you feeling hungry for a while . .  in theory. And I must say it worked for me, for a while.

But as someone showed recently (above) they're full of sugar, which is why they won't work in the long term as these two factors will be fighting each other.  I can recall wanting a piece of fruit or similar after having my lunch-time shake.

I've been thinking of having some sort of protein drink in the mornings cause I struggle to get time to eat a proper breaky.  So I done a bit of research and came up with this website http://www.myopureprotein.com.au/whey-protein-concentrate.html.  This is pure Milk Protein with nothing else added.  It does contain sugars however it will all be lactose.  There is heaps of protein shake recipes available http://lowcarbdiets.about.com/od/desserts/r/breakfastshake.htm and http://lowcarbdiets.about.com/od/beverages/r/berryshake.htm if you sign up for the Mark's Daily Apple newsletter on his website you are given access to some recipes which includes some recipes for protein shakes.  The good thing about this product is that it is plain, not flavoured or sweetened, so if you wanted chocolate you would need to add cocoa powder. I'm actually thinking of buying it myself to try and test out with some of the recipes I've got.

Hi, Catherine, have you tried Sarah Wilson's blog yet?
There is a whole forum on what people have in their shakes, usially you will find they are all sugar free, seeing as Sarah is sugar free and Gluten free....Well worth a read

    http://www.sarahwilson.com.au/2011/11/a-sponsored-review-180-nutritions-protein-superfood/?utm_source=sarah+wilson+List&utm_campaign=a53e4cbb75-A+Swetter+Life+newsletter&utm_medium=email

This should take you straight to the forum on shakes....read the article, then read the forum posts, too.

I just like to have no sugar yoghurt, berries, chia seeds, LSA, plus a little Rice Malt syrup, (if the berries are a little tart), add a dollop of cream just before drinking. There are lots of other things you could add. I just use a stick blender to mash it all together, then I just leave it to meld together for a while & cool down, then I have it a half a glass at a time.  Yummy....

    Good luck, Catherine.

I may have found a good protein powder http://www.aussiebodies.com.au/products/build-lean-muscle/perfect-protein, it is sweetened wtih xylitol and stevia but only for the 2 flavours which is vanilla and chocolate.  There is a natural version which is non sweetened.  You can get them from Chemists or should be able to get them from health food shops.  I saw it online from Chemist Warehouse, 750g for $39.99.  I'm going to pick up some this afternoon, probably the natural one and flavour it myself as I've been doing no sugar now for nearly 1.5 years so i'm not interested in the sweetness.  I'll add my own cocoa and any other flavourings.  I did however make my own shake this morning to see how I would go.  I blended in a blender, 1 cup milk, 100g yoghurt, 6 strawberries, ice and 1/4 cup cream whipped then frozen (to resemble ice cream).  It has kept me full all morning and i'm only now starting to get a bit peckish now (although I did also have my morning latte about 2 hours ago), so give that a go first.  It contains lots of fats from the cream to fill you up, it contains about 300calories, 12g protein and 19g of carbs (from the yoghurt and milk).  I'm dying to see how the protein powder works but definitely for me the shake is so much better and got me off to a good quick start this morning.
