    Hi,

Ok, I'm struggling with labels too, especially as I have just found "Food for Health" products.  I like the gluten free bars which are also fruit free, fructose friendly, wheat free, dairy free, soy free, and no added cane sugar.  However, the Sugars on the label are 20.4g per 100g.  They have Rice Bran Syrup in the ingredients.  Are these ok or not???

Also, I keep seeing "Invert Sugar" listed in ingredients, what is this??

I hope someone can help me as I'm finding this to be a minefield....and I don't even have a sweet tooth!!

    Thanks x

[1] Inverted sugar  - from the Wikipedia article:
Inverted or invert[1] sugar syrup is a mixture of glucose and fructose; it is obtained by splitting sucrose into these two components. Compared with its precursor, sucrose, inverted sugar is sweeter and its products tend to remain more moist and are less prone to crystallisation. Inverted sugar is therefore valued by bakers, who refer to the syrup as trimoline or invert syrup.[2]
So, just like ordinary sucrose it is 50% fructose and therefore on the "avoid" list.

[2] If there is no other sugar in the ingredient list it is probably the maltose from the Rice Syrup, & is about the same percentage. It is OK as it metabolizes to glucose -  see Sweet Poison Quit Plan p.55

[3] Rice Bran Syrup - can't find much about ....bran......  but it's probably the same as rice-syrup. And it's OK. The sugar is maltose. (See SPQP  p55)

[4] Incidentally your question shows up in a Google search for "rice bran syrup"  . . .   you're famous
    :-)

[5] There is a very interesting site ndescribing all sorts of sugars - no technical information but interesting just the same: http://www.thenibble.com/reviews/main/honey/sugar-syrup-glossary.asp

[6] It's a good idea to carry a copy of  SPQP pages 54 & 55 with you when label-reading as the names all sound similar.

[7] All those "free from" s remind me of  the bloke whose doctor told him "No smoking, no drinking and no sex. Now what else do you like?"
