I know this has been sort of mentioned before. My husband, daughter (19) and I have all been without sugar for 4 weeks now. We all have quite a bit to loose (over 20kg each). Initially my daughter and I lost a couple of kilos in the first few weeks but have now put it back on. My husband hasn't lost anything. We are not cheating. Apart from the lack of weight loss I am feeling good. Appetite reduced and have no cravings (except when a work colleague eats black jellybeans!)

Any suggestions as to what we are doing wrong or is this normal?

Check for hidden sugars in processed food and take the lists of sugars from the books with you when shopping as many of the baddies sound like goodies - very confusing.

David also suggest going low-carb for a while.

    Hang in there! JohnN

Thanks for the response. I have diligently checked labels and cleared all the baddies out of the pantry.
I take a magnifying glass with me to the supermarket to check labels before I buy. Nothing in the house with more than 3gm / 100gms!

Same here - week 3 and no weight loss, however I have switched to full fat everything and am happy that I haven't gained weight! I think it can take a bit longer for some people so I am going to keep going for 8 weeks before I start to think about making more changes although I am going to be a bit more careful about how much bread I have been eating!

I was the same. Didn't lose weight for ages. Lost 2kg in the first couple of weeks. Then felt really bloated. someone on one of the discusion pages suggested to cut back on carbs, so I did. Felt much better, and have lost 7 kgs now. I have stayed there for awhile now, but shape is changing which is good. hang in ther. You feel so much better without the sugar, and you don't miss it
    Good luck

I don't know how much you folk weigh or wanted to lose. But perhaps you were not far above your ideal weight. If you go to the Dukan Diet site, they have a free calculator which will enable you to determine that.  http://www.dukandiet.co.uk/

People who come to eating this way with concerns about their weight, were probably dieting to start with.  There is a whole slew of reasons to stop eating sugar, regardless of your weight.  You can eat sugar free and still eat more than you need ( although your appetite control should kick in and help with this, it's worth pointing out, you can't cut sugar, eat huge meals, and lose weight ).

I lost 10 kg in the first month and 4 since then ( in two months now ), despite being less than perfect the last 2 weeks or so. But, I had a VERY high sugar diet beforehand.  I would say the best advice is, eat no sugar because it's good for you, and try to make good choices above that if you want to lose weight, but also accept that regardless of what you weigh, you will be healthier without sugar.

Thanks for the responses. My daughter and I are now loosing weight at about 500gm - 1kg per week. My husband still is not loosing weight. Definitely feeling the benefits of being sugar free. Have been very happy to see the lovely supportive responses from some of you but actually quite resent the patronising ones.
I would suggest that people responding to queries on this forum should assume that the person with the query (who has, we can assume, done the research before deciding to take on this sugar free regime) is of reasonable intelligence and understanding!

Hi Janie.  I've read my reply three times to see if it might come across as patronising, but my conclusion is, I really can't tell what you think is patronising.  I hope that no-one intended to patronise you, I'm sure we're all trying to provide the most complete answers we can, to try to be as helpful as possible.

If your husband is eating everything exactly the same as you ( including quantity ), and not losing weight, perhaps he either does not need to, or needs to eat less in order to lose weight ? Either way, if you're all feeling better, than that's definitely the most important thing !!

Hang in there, I felt the same as you also. But go by how you are feeling. The weight will come off. Mine has been a slow process, but people comment on how much weight I have lost, thought he scales don't say it , i can feel it. And the overall health benefits is enough to keep me going. Plus if you are exercising, muscle weighs more than fat. I feel great when I go out, and those around me eating everything handed to them, and I don't feel tempted, no cravings, and I don't feel deprived.
Great to hear you and your daughter are now losing weight. Maybe as someone else mentioned, your husband may need to look at serving sizes, could be just something as simple as that. Good luck to you all.
    Helen
