After 2 weeks of not eating my usual sweet treats and trying to cut down on sugar generally, today I bought a raspberry muffin and coffee at Gloria Jeans.   Within half an hour I was feeling very nauseous and developed a headache!  So I won't be doing that again!

I also have noticed a change in taste.  I haven't even finished the book and still in the changing pantry and shopping list over to no sugar stage.  This morning I made my cup of tea with the same amount of artifical sugar as normal and couldn't drink it as it tasted too sweet.  Tomorrow I will leave the sugar out.  I also have not craved that cup of coffee as much.  I always thought my coffee tasted bad due to the artifical sugar.  I now realise it was the sugar craving.  Isn't it great if your body is going to make you keep off sugar.

Must make the time to finish the book and take the bull by the horns.

    Hi,

I have taken sugar out of my diet now for 3 weeks but on Friday we had Chinese (my son's choice to celebrate a Distinction in the Science Competition) which was honey chicken, caramelised pork and beef and black bean.  Well in the middle of the night I felt so ill, I wasn't sick but thought I would be so I slept out in the lounge room.  The rest of the family were totally fine (I am the only one taking sugar out - they will eventually follow as I do the shopping so I will not restock as we run out of everything sugar!)  I spent the rest of the weekend basically feeling pretty crap, the fact that the rest of my family was ok suggests to me it was introducing the sugar back into a meal on Friday.

My question for everyone else becoming sugar free is has anyone else had a similar experience?  Had a reaction after reintroducing sugar after pulling it out like Isabel mentions above feeling nauseous after having a muffin?  Would really love to know.

    Thanks,

    Nicole

    Hello!

I'm Mariana and I'm new to the site. I read Sweet Poison when it came out a while ago and became more mindful about sugar. I don't eat a lot of it, but I'm startled to see how it sneaks in. I've just finished the quit book now and am hoping to really stick to the plan.

My problem is the remorse to throw food away though and that's delaying my sugar free start... that said I'm the sort of person who can have tim tams in the fridge and just eat one a week - any good advice?

Also how long did it take you guys to feel sugar free? sounds like you all have given how sick you felt from sugar!!

So I decided to either eat or throw out/give away the remaining chocolate, tim tams etc. I sat down and ate two tim tam caramels, 7 little Roses chocolates and a kinder surprise. I so nearly felt sick, it was not hard at all to put the other biscuits I had into the work jar.

This morning my stomach feels like there was a music festival in there yesterday. I also have a mild headache. I don't feel good at all... thinking this might have been the step I needed to go sugar free - bring it on, can't wait!

    eeeurgh....

Stopping sugar consumption is similar in discipline to stopping smoking. You simply cannot cut back without heightening withdrawal problems. You must either stop or not stop....and the time to do it is when you first think about it as there is, at that point, a psychological imperative to assist you.

Turf out the bikkies, the chocolates, the sugar jar, the sweet sauces, jams, honey etc., check the labels on all your canned food and take those which are too sugar packed to St Vinnies. In less than a month you will understand the benefits and wonder what all the fuss was about.

    Good luck

Hi Mariana, welcome. I agree with David. I'm an ex-smoker and the withdrawal symptoms I went through giving that up are the exact same I'm getting now I'm giving up sugar. I'm in my second week and don't even think about having something sugary now. Occasionally though, I do get hit with a craving, quite badly. If I get super desperate, I will make some muffins and use splenda in them. My partner and I both love them, especially straight out of the oven, as we don't feel like we are missing anything that way. Glad you got to experience the incentive you needed. Best of luck.
