How Much Sugar?

Anyone else feeling tired?

    Hi everyone,

I've been trying to kick the sugar habit for just over 3 weeks now.  I started off really well and even lost a little bit of weight but I've put that back on now because of all the extra fat I've been eating (with the butter, full cream milk, cheeses, bacon etc.) I'm also feeling very tired all day long, it's a real effort to do my usual daily chores plus going to work.  A friend who tried cutting out sugar a few years ago said she had the same problem.  Does this last long, is it only a phase?  Is anyone else experiencing the same thing or is it just me?  I'm also a little bit concerned that my cholesterol will get too high with all the fat but it would appear that everyone else's (testimonials in book) drops after kicking the sugar habit.  I certainly hope so because it's already 6.3, don't really want it to go any higher.  I'd really love to hear from anyone that may be experiencing the same as me.

    Hi Margaret

I am so glad I read your post.  I have been on the sugar free track for two months now, initially lost a bit ie 500gs or so now have regained it and am feeling so terrible today, lethargic, can't be bothered doing anything etc.  Don't know if it is because I am older (am 67) or what the problem is.  Glad to hear someone else has the same symptoms.

Sorry I am not the bearer of good news but other people seem to be losing so easily and I am trying so hard and not having any luck.  Could have thrown the scales out this morning but I'll persevere, maybe do a bit more exercise than I currently do (ie two linedance classes per week) and eat less.

Best of luck and hang in there.

    Dear Margaret,

Thanks for the response, it is good to talk to others that are experiencing the same things.  Maybe it is our age, I'm 60 and don't have as much energy as I used to.  i started going to a Zumba dance class a couple of weeks ago (just once a week).  That's a lot of fun although I struggle to keep up with the young ones but the exercise has to be good.  I have a treadmill sitting in my loungeroom and I used to get up religiously every morning & do 30 minutes on it.  But since starting the sugar free trek and having less energy I just can't seem to get myself motivated! It must have something to do with sugar giving you energy.

Let's just give it our best shot and hopefully something miraculous will happen soon for us both. If we keep supporting eachother and exchanging stories, we just might get there!!

    best wishes, Margaret

Hi everybody, I read David's book a couple of months ago and found it made so much sense.  I just couldn't put it down.  I haven't noticed much difference with tiredness but I am feeling frustrated with weight gain as opposed to weight loss.  I have been a life time member of Weight Watchers for a number of years and usually hover around my goal weight.  I did lose 1 kg in the first week of going sugar free and going back to full fat dairy products but since then have put on 2.5 kg and feel so despressed as a result.  I didn't do any exercise for a few weeks as I was sick with the flu which really drained me of all energy for a long time.  I wasn't particularly worried as David's book says that we can drop sugar and no longer have to exercise like mad things.  Sounded great.  I feel I have no choice but to go back to exercising an hour a day 7 days per week (3 of them at the gym) in order to try and get the weight off.  I have also gone back to (sugar free) low fat dairy as I just can't afford to put on any more weight and ideally need to lose what I have put on (and a little bit more would be better).  I don't overeat and eat a pretty healthy diet (and no, I haven't even been substituting sugar with dextrose).  I have a theory that the people who lose a lot of weight going sugar free are those who consumed a lot of it in the first place, which I probably didn't.  From memory, I think David said that he drank two cans of soft drink per day, so cutting that out alone would have considerably decreased his calorie intake for the day.  I just have to soldier on in the knowledge that whilst going sugar free doesn't seem to be doing anything for my weight, at least I will be healthier.  I am, however, very confused about the full fat/low fat dairy subject as I have heard so many conflicting views and am not sure if I am doing the right thing by going back to low fat dairy.  I am just scared that my weight is going to completely balloon if I don't.

    Hi All,

My partner is a bit concerned about all the extra fat I am eating. I've never had bacon and eggs so many times a week before! (He is an absolute sugar addict however) Like I have said in my post "shift workers)" I've tried it all in the past. I think you need to give new things a chance before deciding if they are right for you. My primary goal is to lose all the extra weight I have accumulated over the years but I understand that it's going to take longer to get it off. Don't give up, it all makes sense. Good luck to all out there who are following the path to a sugar free life :)

    Good morning sugar free friends,

Isn't this forum just wonderful.  After reading the responses I feel so much better and have a lighter step (so to speak, hopefully down the track it will be lots lighter haha).  Have decided to cut back on carbs a bit as I know I have been having more than necessary, my inbuilt appetite control system is broken I think.

I have a friend who goes to Zumba classes Marg and she loves it and she is 75, keeps herself so fit, I hope I am that energetic when I am that age, I would like to start a class but I do plenty of linedancing and think I'll start walking around the paddocks (we are on 6 acres), Jess my dog will enjoy that.

Keep the information coming it is so helpful and encouraging.

    Have a nice day

    Margaret
