Hi, I am new here and have started to Follow David's no sugar policy and I come up with my first stumbling block. I bought a packet of Brewers sugar from Woolworths and apart from other things the label included "maltodextrin (corn syrup), dextrose monohydrate". Is that Glucose, I don't really trust it.Can anyone tell me one way or the other; is that a safe sweetener?
    Thank you Valerie

    Hi Valerie

Maltodextrin (corn syrup) does not contain any fructose and Dextrose monohydrate is a molecule of water welded to a molecule of glucose. As long as there are no other types of sugar in your brewers sugar your brewers sugar should be OK to use. You need to be careful though. I picked up a bag of "brewers sugar" at my local supermarket and discovered that although it was 20% Glucose the other 80% was Sucrose (table sugar 50% fructose). Apparently the term "brewers sugar" isn't definitive. I ended up buying a 500g pack of pure Glucose powder from a local health food shop. I had to search for it though, not every health food shop had it. Be careful of "Brewing Sugar". Very careful indeed. David has stated that "brewing sugar" is not o.k. Based on what I've found he's right.

Thank You Lew, There were no other sugars on the label, so I feel comforted, But as you say to be sure I will go for the pure glucose or Dextrose. LLL Valereijoan

I have been  getting Coopers Brewing Sugar from  Coles (I think - I alternate with  Woolies) and it contains only  dextrose and maltodextrin.
