so i have read Davids first book, and am half way through the 2nd...!!! i am planning on finishing it tonight..!! i decided weeks ago that tomorrow would be my date to start FRUCTOSE FREE>...!!!!

so here i am, last supper eaten, pizza, chocolate, cake and coke (lol) and tomorrow is the start to my new life. I am feeling very positive, and believe i can do this... i am however scarred...!!!

i have had a long addiction with sugar, since my first pregnancy 5 years ago, before that i led a relative healthy lifestyle. my recent pregnancy i was quite healthy, but since having my baby girl, my sugar addiction has grown HUGELY....!!!

    does anyone have any advise???

and also it should be noted, i live with my partner, his 14yr old, our 5 year old and a baby... i have not cleaned out my cupboard, i have not asked them to do this, but gradually they will realise the cupboards contence will change. is this doable with others in the house... i have banned them from cake, chocolate, lollies and coke whilst in the house though. and they are willing to try new meals (sugarfree) that i make also, they just arent willing to throw out their favourites (yet)...

anyways... i will keep you updated at my progress....!!! i read some peoples words in the forums and i just cant wait till the withdrawlals end...!!!! hahahahaha

    Hi Carol,

I am about 3 months in and feeling fabulous. It's not as hard as you think it will be. The withdrawals are pretty horrible but once you acknowledge them and get through them it's breezy :) I have an 11 year old who is also fructose free and I think it is harder for him than it is for me. All those temptations at school. However, once you are a little way a long you will no longer 'crave' for anything. You probably can't imagine life without Coke and chocolate. I used to be a huge fan of both of these, preferably together, but now I don't 'want' to eat them. Not because I know they have fructose, but because I just don't feel like eating them. I have found I enjoy food a whole lot more because I can now taste it so differently. It's like the tastes are clear for the first time. There has been eater stuff in the cupboard for weeks and I have no desire to eat them. Threw them out today actually.

My biggest advice is just get through the initial period. Know it won't be forever. I was through it in 2 weeks. I went cold turkey. I also stopped drinking coffee and I think that has helped this process be so much more easy because I no longer had those up and down times through the day. Also know, after the withdrawal, you never have to feel like that again. You will feel clear headed, more energetic, happier in yourself, lose weight, and realise the world is no longer about low carb, high protein, low gi, bla bla bla. All you have to do is avoid fructose. Easy peasy :)

    thank you,
that does sound promising. I was really concerned last night, that i wouldnt even make it a day. but today, i made it!!!!!! the only words to describe how i have felt today are words like numb, hazy, bored, and my head is definitely heavy!!!!! i have had a few extra coffees to help me through, but i think tomorrow i might approach it differently. it was so cold today, i used the coffee to warm up. i have managed to eliminate sugar from my coffee and weet-bix etc without a drama. i will see how i go tomorrow, each day at a time. the kids are a bit disapointed they dont have a mini cupcake in their lunch boxes this week, but i couldnt have the temptation to eat them, so this weekend im thinking about cooking some dextrose ones for them! and just not telling them...!!! i will never convince the 14 year odl to go fructose free, but over time, there will only be fructose free things on offer at home, as i beleive this is better for them.!!!! what sort of withdrawals did you go through?? my partner keeps telling me not to go cold turkey, but i told him if i cant go cold turkey then i wasnt going to do it. lol. i did also have an hour sleep today, because my baby went to sleep and i thought instead of wandering around the house, time would pass quicker if i slept...!! i dont know how i would cope if i was working 8 hours a day...!!! lucky for me i can kip when need with all these feelings of blankness!!!!
thank you again. 3 months congratulations on the great effort, and getting through the hard part..!!! :-)

After my third child, I found I was craving sugar (who knew about addictions 7 years ago!), and discovered a lovely local yoghurt. Previous to this, I'd never eaten it cos I thought it was yucky. Anyway, after eating it for a while (it did have a small amount of honey as sweetener, but not much I think) I realised I wasn't craving sugar any more. Some nice greek yoghurt may work for you? This is my breakfast now, with a tablespoon or so of mixed berries :)

mmmmm that sounds delicious...!! i pureed some fruit for my baby today, berries and pear, so i added a teaspoon of this to my yoghurt today. was very nice. i am struggling though. i have kept under my allowed fructose amount for 2 days now, but i am fantasising about chocolate, and sugar!!! my partner is right now eating easter chocolate, and as much as i want some (i can smell it) i wont do it. come too far now.
    lol.

That's the way, Carol, ask your hubby to please eat it away from you, if at all possible. This will show him how determined you are this time. My partner is a 'feeder' , and I had to take a stand with him, so I put his arms round me & asked him if he liked the slimmer me, he said 'yes, of course' so I said, well, if you keep offering me sugary stuff & serving me heaps of bread & potatos, I'll be back to fat Sylv before you know it, don't you want me to get slimmer?'  He thought about it & said 'of course I want you to lose weight",  I then gave him a big hug & kiss, and he's been pretty good since then. Be nice  & appeal to the best part of him, if necessary, be a bit 'Mother' to son thingy, if you get my drift. Give it a bit of thought & you'll know what to say.
Have watched your posts, am very proud of you, it's hard, but we all know, you can do it.  One thing I would recommend, try to find something to do that absorbs you, even for a couple of hours, if possible, so you aren't thinking 'food' 24/7. I'm lucky (?) that way, I can amuse myself on the computer for hours & I sometimes forget to eat. I started in Sept 2010, and am eating smaller portions, & only really get a bit of craving if I'm bored. Usually for bread, or just more food to stuff into my mouth.  So far I've lost 8.2 kilos, 30 odd to go!.
I had the pleasure of my partner's brother staying with us for 3 days. Sunday, they went for the papers, came back with bread rolls & cakes, & I was presented with a neenish tart, an ex- favourite of mine, so I said, thanks very much, but I can't eat it, as I had some dessert (way too much) last night and this will take me way over for the 24 hours.
So he ate it himself. I am trying to get the message over to him about sugar, but he's quite slim & doesn't see the bad in it.  He lost weight after his girlfriend did the dirty on him & they broke up, and is only now putting it back on. Still, no excuse in my book to pig out like that. On his last morning, I made them 2-egg cheese/mushroom omelettes, but he had to have a vegemite/cheese roll as well, so that meant Kev had to have one as well. (Too much carbs for him.) As well, he had bought himself the biggest doughnut I've ever seen & ate that too!!  Shocked!!!
Well, good luck with it all, there is lots of support for you here, and on the other forum, the Sweet Poison one.

Thank you again..!!! i didnt know about the other forum, the sweet poison one!!! i had a good look at it today and have read lots of interesting and motivating things.

I have a friend who lives local to me who is also doing this with me, but i brought the books, i joined the website, she just loves the idea of it, first and formost i am doing this for myself. been a long time since i have done something for me!!! probably since having my first baby almost 5 years ago. i have about 30-40kg to loose in total

my partner has been good, he does ask me if its ok, he mentioned the other night he was going out to the garage for a while and i laughed at him and said if its to go eat the chocolate bavarian in the fridge, then its ok to eat it in here. im not feeling like eating right now. lol. and i didnt feel like the chocolate last night until i smelt it.. hahahaha. today i tried to make a cup of cocca... it was grooosssss. so yeah wont be doing that again!!! lol. sticking to water, tea and coffee.

i guess now i am into day 3, i am seeing that the family is being supportive, as i have stuck to it so far, i guess they didnt think i was serious. but seeing me without chocolate, lollies and coke for 3 whole days is enough to show them that, as thats never happened. everything has seemed pretty cruisy still. even with feeling down and hazy, im coping much better than i originally thought. and the fear is starting to leave me. i was sooo scarred. hahahaha. no doubt it will probably get worse before it gets better, but im feeling different, not enough yet to put into words, but definitely different.

    :)

oh and... i forgot to ask.
do you watch your carbs?? i know David talks of going carb free for a boost in weight loss, but so far, i have been eating bread every day, and i wouldnt usually have done that, for lunch i'd be quite happy to have some chocky or something, but now i am having bread.... should i limit the carbs to have an immediate effect do you think? and have you gone up and down in weight, or always down??

Hi Carol. I went fructose-free in 1st week of Sept 2010, by Xmas Eve had lost 6.6kg.  Even tho' I was good over Xmas, I guess I ate a lot of hi-carb stuff, plus I was eating more bread to stop feeling so hungry.  By Feb I had put on 4kg, so started 'tweaking' my food intake, cutting right back on bread, & also potatoes, this seemed to work for me, and I am now 8.2 kilos down...... I do fluctuate a lot, they say it's due to water retention, but I always remember when I went to WeightWatchers years ago, they told us that what we eat today will reflect what we weigh next week, and said we should only get weighed weekly or monthly.  Sorry, I can't do that!!  I weigh myself most mornings, was doing the Nekked Dance around the bathroom AND the bedroom when I found I had hit the magical 103 kilos. Lightest I'd been for 18 years!!!  Woo Hoo...That must have been some sight to behold. Since then, approx 10 days, I have been up & down between 103.2 and 104.2.
As for the cocoa, I'm having the same problem as you. Either use an artificial sweetner, until you've gone thru' withdrawals, or start using dextrose, although I had to have 3 heaped teaspoonsful in a (large) mug to make it taste ok. I do think I put too much cocoa powder in though, maybe I should only put 1 heaped teaspoonful.
Yes, the other forum is great, you should scout around for recipes. Some of the 'Ladies who Bake' have posted some great ones.  Janells is even thinking about writing a fructose-free cook book!!  That we will all have to buy!
Here's a couple of other links to look at

    http://www.raisin-hell.com/
    http://www.nofructose.org/
    http://www.sparkpeople.com

The first is David's, the other is a guy ( I think it's a guy!!!)  who posted just yesterday that he had started this blog with his Father. I found it quite interesting, with some good links, (not all the links are good tho'!), you can check & make your own mind up. The last one is good if you really are serious about losing weight & getting fit. There's a lot of motivational stuff on there. I joined a Team called Spark People Downunder....It can be a bit OTT, but works, I think.

    Good luck with it all
