How Much Sugar?

    Hi All,

Thought I'd share my story.  Went cold turkey 7 months ago and have managed to avoid fructose consistently for that period but for a few small slip ups in the last month.  I have lost only 7 kilos in this time but I know I have compensated for the no sugar rule by eating a lot more chips and nuts in this time and when desperate for a fizzy drink (I used to drink a heap of coca cola) I go for a pepsi max or a lucozade. I also haven't been super stringent on dinners etc and ensuring sugar levels are below 3% but have avoided sauces and the like high in sugar.

David is dead on regarding the need to break bad habits.  I still like to snack late at night and this is more from habit than hunger, so wanting to lose another 10 or so kilos I have started tracking what I am eating.  The chocolate slice recipe with the glaze in the quit plan is delicious but it packs a heap of calories/kilojoules.  As I was eating from habit and not hunger I am certain that the nuts, chips, slice and milk that I would consume has limited the weight loss to date.

Since reading the Sweet poison quit plan staying off sugar has not been overly difficult.  Reading the book flicked a switch and as other posters have noted I now look at sugary sweets as poison rather than craving them.  I get sweet cravings every now and then and have tried a couple of recipes in the book which have worked quite well.  My triglyceride levels which were high have unfortunately not come down with the reduction in sugar, but my doctor has said that considering the high level they are, it is likely this is due to genes rather than dietary issues.

I recommend giving the quit plan a go, as my energy levels are up and I am feeling more alert and energetic during the day.

Good luck to all those starting out, stick with it, and a big thanks to David for writing the book and opening my eyes.

    Regards

    Greg

Be careful with the lucozade, as it is only the "original" that does not have fructose.
Also watch the total amount of fructose a day, as all those sauces etc add up, even if they are 3%.  I think it is the hidden fructose that is the problem for most of us.

Welcome Greg. I have been doing this now for almost 10 months, & I have lost 11 kilos. I was 111.4 when I started, and am a post menopausal older female!!  So, while we aren't alike in those ways, David does say in the book that a 2 week cut back on carbs is recommended if you hit a plateau.  I had to do this, as I started to put on weight after Xmas, even though I was really really good over the holiday period, my portion sizes had increased & I had started to eat crisps again, (I gave them up about 3 years ago).

So, even as we know, everybody's bodies aren't the same, and what works for me, may not work for you, I think that David's advice is good for you guys out there. If you get what I'm trying to say?!!

I think I confused myself!  Where's those Smileys David? Nothing wrong with a bit of humour to keep us going.

Have you been using the Sweet Poison forums as well?  Lots of really helpful people on both sites, plus lots of info, your questions may have already been answered, so explore.  Good Luck

    Blessings
