Hi everyone, I am very new to this forum and I hope to learn heaps from all you experienced members. I really want to lose 6 kilos - and I'm sick of the yo yo dieting I've been doing my whole life (I'm in my early 60's).  I know I can give up sugar - my main motivation being to feel better.  My tummy has been bordering on IBS forever and ever and even the three days I've been eating FF, I feel 100% better. What a relief !  I am wondering if I am actually fructose intolerant - I know for a fact that I am lactose intolerant, so maybe I'm both.  Anyway, to feel better is a huge bonus, now to lose some weight !!! Thanks for reading my intro, wish me luck !!! :-)

    Hey Kathy,

I am a newbie also. My intro is under It Worked For Me.
I know you can lose 6kgs, because I have dropped about 14 in 2 months and I have not struggled. Dont think of changing your eating as a Diet, it is how you choose to eat forever !
I am happy to share with you what I changed, so just ask, as I dont want to send you info that you dont want.
    Be good,

    Muzza

Welcome Kathy. I'm not in the same situation as you, (except for the age!) so don't know if I can help much.
I had a lot of weight to lost, have lost 14 kilos so far, had my ups & downs, will be 12 months fructose free in 2 weeks time, can't believe I've been on this for that long. Time has gone so fast.
the main benefit for me has been increased mobility, (I was out gardening last week), and not feeling so hungry. For most of my adult life, I have been hungry, not any more. I do miss my bread though, I used to eat at least 4 - 6 slices per day, now down to 1, sometimes 2. Second best thing I ever did in my life, 1st was give up smoking.
I wish you well on your journey, any questions, you will get lots of help here, and over on the Sweet Poison
    forum.

    Good Luck

    Greetings everyone,
I've been very slack at introducing myself since I joined this forum months ago.  Di is my name (don't worry about the full name spelling) and I hope to get educated on many things involving food. I just turned 29 and for someone that age, I am very tired and unfit. I also have some tummy issues and was put on a very strickt diet by a dietitian, which did not last for more than 2 weeks.
I got quite engrossed in reading the 1st book by David when I found out about it. I'm so glad I stumbled upon it.

I still haven't kicked the sugar, although I am more aware how much I used to put into my body. I have cleaned out my pantry of most sauces and addatives.  Just this Tuesday (30th August)  I got my very own Thermomix delivered so I've been cooking up at least one super fresh meal each night. It forces you to only use fresh ingredients.  Its certainly not for everyone to buy as you alone have to see the benefit in getting it, but in my case the driver wasn't only the food but helps and forces me to think of only fresh foods.

Ideally I would love to have a buddy to quit the sugar habit with me, but its been hard.  I tried to talk to a few people at work and at home, but no one was interested.  I don't think they liked me commenting on their lunches and telling them how much sugar was in that fruit bowl or sauces they were eating.   Not to worry, I know I will kick the habit and keep reading as much as I can that gets posted here.
One thing I'll definitely do is get involved in the forums and read about your experiences.

    Hello Kathy

Welcome! I just posted my newbie intro.  How is the tummy going?  Mine swells up, but I have been slack to find out what triggers it.  I know that lactose free milk is better for me, leek and onions I have to be careful with but ideally not eat them. Well there is a whole list of fun fruits and veg I was told to not to eat.  I may pass the list onto David to see if he finds it useful for everyone to read.
Can you share anything in particular you can eat and won't cause you trouble.

    Di

    Hi Kathy,

I too have suffered from IBS for years, I also have to have a internal exam every 2 years to remove horrible polyps from my intestine that have the potential to turn in cancer - I'm only 26 and have been having this operation since I was 18.

I've also tried to break up with Sugar a handful of times in the last year. Each time I failed I also had a little win as I had changed one small thing in my diet, for example switching Skim milk for whole milk, cutting out sweet yogurt, not eating biscuits at work.

I am a fit person (have just completed a 1/2 marathon) but even though I exercise for over 8 hours a week I have consistently been putting on weight for the last 18 months. Through this process, every time I binged (becuase I did) on sugar my IBS became more and more violent and debilitating.

I've been through a lot of self management through this process and have finally popped out the other side - and it feels AMAZING!!!

I've finally nailed the sugar demon, over the last week I've lost 2 kg's, am performing better than ever in my exercise, am alert at work, energised, clear headed and best of all flat stomached!

And to top it all off, my IBS symptoms are COMPLETELY gone. I for a time thought that the IBS was from lactose, gluten, processed meat etc... but it was none of these. Without fructose in my diet I can eat all of the above and still feel as fresh as a daisy (no awkward exits from a restaurant bathroom...).

Enjoy this journey, it maybe hard, but just stay focused. If you feel the temptation tapping you over the shoulder just stop, take a breath, and tell yourself that everything will be OK - it will, and your body will love you for it.

I'm due for my next exam in another 6 months, and I hope to have a zero result so that I never have to go through that process again - thanks David for helping.

Hey Muzza, thanks for your reply, and I would LOVE to know what you have changed.  I have lost 1 kilo in 2 weeks, which isn't a whole lot.  I think I'm eating bread every day or crumpets [mostly at breakfast time] and this may be my down fall.  I'd love to know how you lost 14 kilos, so p-l-e-a-s-e share!!!  Many thanks.  Kathy :)

Thank you so much Sylvia.  I am battling on, missing fruit a lot, otherwise doing well.  Only lost 1 kilo in 2 weeks, but I think I'm eating too much bread.  2 slices for breakfast or 2 crumpets for breakfast.  I guess I'll have to be strong and give these up too and go onto porridge or eggs etc., but I do so love bread and I always get the "right" type, i.e. less than 3g sugar for 100 g. :((  Kathy

Wow Tiffany, that's quite a journey you've been on.  Congratulations!!  Seems like you've nailed it now.  Wish I could say the same, but ... I am determined and I will get there.  Going overseas for a month soon and that will be a challenge.  Eating out for a month, OMG.  I'm dreading it really, but I am determined to meet the challenge head on and come out a winner.  Have to admit though, it's the hardest eating plan I have ever been on, but probably the only one that's made me feel so much better health wise, and also helped me to sleep through the night.  Whenever I have a restless night now, I know that my diet the previous day must have had a fructose blow out, and usually when I look back on it all, it has.  Amazing what a deamon it is for those of us who can't tolerate it.  You keep up your excellent work, and I will try to follow suit !!!  You're an inspiration :)))

    Di

Hi Di, Thx for asking, I'm going OK, with the occasional failure, but not too often.  My tummy always tells me when I've failed, usually when eating out.  I always have lactose free milk, but that's impossible to get when ordering a flat white in a cafe! :) And I love my coffee shop coffee treat every day.  Missing fruit like crazy, but don't miss anything else.  I was a fruitaholic!  Used to eat at least 3 or 4 pieces a day and all the worse [highest in fructose] fruits being my favourites, so they're gone and I look at the fruit bowl and feel sad. :(  I am about to give up most of my bread intake as I think I'm still overdoing that, 2 pieces a day for breakfast, which might be why I'm not losing as much weight as I'd like to.  And yes, onions, leeks, shallots, garlic - they ALL upset me no end, so I just don't eat them. Good luck and keep up the good work !!!  Kathy
