How Much Sugar?

    Hi all

I heard David speak at our local gym & was pretty inspired.  I gave up smoking 5 years ago and took up carbs & dont seem to have a food off switch, so what he had to say struck a chord. My husband is a recalcitrant diabetic who loves sugar!! I figure we are perfect candidates to move to this way of living.

Recently my husband has suffered with what seems like irritable bowel syndrome - but it coincided with mandarin season & him consuming 6-8 a day and a sudden likeness for porrige - drowned in honey.  Anyway it made me think after listening to David about the amount of fructose he was consuming.

I didnt think that I ate that much sugar - I am sure you have all heard that before!! My healthy start to the day is often a protein shake (9.4% sugar) + fibre cleanse (13% sugar 42% fibre) + rice milk (5.8% sugar) or Goodness first museli (17% sugar 29% fibre) + rice milk or Pura Veda - a high protein seed mix - that I used to soak in apple juice but now a dash of rice milk (12% sugar 12% fibre) with home made yoghurt (5.5% sugar)

I would often have one of these mixes before gym/work at 0500 then another at morning tea/lunch - so obviously I am having more sugar than I realized. I dont really have a lot of sugar otherwise that I can identify - black coffee no sugar, no soft drinks, wraps with ham tuna (plain) salad for lunch or cottage cheese corn thins. I would tho have museli bars which i have thrown out now.

For dinners I will miss oyster sauce & some other asian sauces & salad dressings including balsamic

I have trawled the supermarket aisles for low sugar alternatives, but will really miss my quick protein shakes in the morning. Does anyone have an alternative? I just took back the Atkins $21 shake because it listed inulin in the first couple of ingredients!!

My husband is on board if I can help his gut issues - I have even pinched my sister's icecream maker & made a batch of the choc icecream in the recipe section - but he has to swear off fructose or else!!

I really want to make this work - we both could do to lose 10 kg and would love to hear any advice that you have to offer

    Cheers

    Jenni

Hi, Jenni, welcome to the forum......I think that you have both been given a chance at a new way of life.  Assure hubby that in a few weeks time, he will be feeling so much better. And you too....as you go along, you may have withdrawal symptoms, I didn't, but had been (for some unknown reason) cutting back on sugar in general, biscuits, cakes, that sort of stuff, for a few weeks before I heard David interviewed by Richard Fidler on ABC702 last year.  Try not to obsess about it all, just remain calm, and go cold turkey. I can't help with the protein shakes, as I've never had them ever, just think what you were putting into your body!!  Imagine!!  I am shocked.
Have some eggs, maybe an omelette cooked in a little butter, with avocado, grated cheese & a little ham or chicken in it. That's 3 eggs, mind. I guarantee if you can eat anything for at least 4 hours, well, I think you'll be happy. But have nuts as a snack, your other food seems to be ok. I always like to have some almonds as a snack after dinner. They take long enough to eat to satisfy the 'picking at' nature of snacks for me.  I also like to have a small cup of cocoa made on all milk, full fat, and a small piece of hard cheese before bedtime, so I can take my pills.
Identify your problem time, the time when you like to snack, and shop for it. I've found that going high protein & lower carb has cured my diarrhoea...so that may reassure hubby.  Find other things for him to eat other than what he normally eats. You can still eat fruit, just eat the whole fruit & usually 2 pieces a day. Just limit the bananas, and apples. There's another one to avoid, but I can't remember it ATM....Berries, pears, kiwi fruit and melon are all good to have.  Yoghurt is good. But must be no sugar.
Put a few berries with some Rice Malt syrup,  just a little drizzle, in a small ramekin & put into a hot oven for about 5 mins. Mash, and add to the Yoghurt, or pour over some home-made ice-cream, (good idea you had there)....yummy.  Nice spread on toast, too...

Hope some of this helps....good luck with it all, maybe see you over on Sweet Poison as well. Lots of lovely people here and there only too willing to help you. You just need to ask.

Hi, I'm new to the site. I have just purchased David's book, and can't put it down. Very interesting and easy to read. I have decided to follow the book. Though I didn't think I had much sugar, now will be looking at the labels. I love my wine, and thought this may have been the reason I wasn't losing weight. I thought I ate quite healthly. I also exercise a lot, go to the gym. Have a personal trainer. But for some reason I'm just stuck on the same weight. I have lost almost 30kg's. Then I got an injury, so had to stop a lot of my gym. I regained 10kg's during this time, but I now have the all clear, and back at the gym. But still no weight loss. I'm cutting the sugar from today, and will post again in maybe a month, to tell you how I'm going. Wish me luck.

    Try this one.

I bought the sample packs. Really very good.

I have run out so just use yogurt, berries, lsa, chia seeds and a bit of rice malt syrup. Keeps me going for 4 hours before I even feel hungry.

Thanks Sylvia for the warm welcome & Helen I am with you about wine!! Sally I saw the 180nutrition link on Sarah Wilson site - & downloaded her ebook. I thought it was pretty expensive, so am glad to hear it is good.  Coles (here in Brisbane) had the Nature's Way 'Natural' Protein shake - less than 1gm sugar on special last week so I bought that to try. It is soy based protein & I am learning now that soy products are not all they are cracked up to be. It doesnt taste like much either - but I need something to eat that takes 3 min or less first thing in the morning that keeps me full for a few hours !!

I have made the muesli (adding chia seeds) in David's book, and add that to home made yoghurt - a bit tart & not that appetising, so added some rice malt syrup & it is much better - $8 at the health food store $4 at Coles! I am not a natural fruit eater, but bought some blueberries & will add those too tomorrow.

The one thing that I have noticed since minimising fructose is a feeling of fullness that I dont remember before - harder to push thru :)

Anyway, I am feeling better & trying hard to stay on track - my next weigh & measure will tell

    Cheers & good luck all

There are lots of lovely Mum's on this site & over on the Sweet Poison site that will be able to help with all that, Helen.

It seems that the little ones get really into it, and are the Sugar Nazis, keeping you to your word!! Have a family meeting & tell them all baout what you'fe 'found out' and how it's bad for you, all that stuff, they will maybe be a bit resistant at first, but you're a Mum, you can easily substitute dextrose and you're in charge of the food. I'm sure you know all about 'hiding' the veggies!!  lol...
Good luck to you all. It may take a while but it will happen, as long as you've made up your mind to do it.

Hi Helen!  My kids are both 5 and 3.5 and i've found it quite easy to convert my two to no sugar!  The eat so much better especially my 5 year old.  She eats her veges and eats nearly everything on the plate.  I don't care what people say if my two have sugar now they just go stir crazy like they are high on sugar.  However since switching their diet they are so much more calmer and when they have dextrose they don't go crazy.  I simply switched my 3.5 year old no problems, he loves pancakes and doughnuts.  My daughter I sat down and had a bit of a chat with her, explained that sugar is bad for us and was telling her about all the good foods and bad foods (like her tiny teddies she used to loves and lollies etc).  She seems to have understood that and she eats natural yoghurt now rather then the sugar filled kids yoghurt. But in saying that there is going to be times when you can't control it like birthday's at school/day care.  I have told her that once in a while it's ok, just not all the time.  I know at the end of the day it's only a bit and the rest of the day is sugar free.
