Lethargic!

Hi All, started fructose free a fortnight ago, I probably ate sneaky sugar for the first two days of this as I wasn't reading labels properly. However, I then went hardcore. I feel my appetite adjusted in the last few days, I really don't desire anything sweet at the moment (I ate a lot of hidden sugar), but I am thirsty ALL the time.  I'm eating a very balanced diet, vegetables, proteins and carb's (brown rice, potatoes).  I feel really tired all the time, waking after a full undisturbed eight hours feeling exhausted.  My legs ache all day and I have no energy. It has been very hot lately so I'm hoping the tiredness is linked to the heat! Of course, having shared with my family and friends that I'm fructose free I have my share of people willing to sabotage 'you had more energy when you ate sugar', 'you should just have a little bit, you'll feel better'.  Has anyone else experienced the extreme lethargy? and how do you really know when you are out of withdrawal?

Hi, Samantha, and welcome to the forum. I started in Sept 2010, and, if I remember correctly, I was feeling tired all the time as well, but I am old, so just thought it was part of the process. I did read somewhere that with any new eating regime you should always get extra rest/sleep.  I think you may also be having carb overload, I'd ditch the potatoes, and cut right back on bread, and other simple carbs, you will find that carbs and starchy things will make you feel sleepy anyway. Try to up the protein a bit and cut back on the carbs, and see how you go. I mean how long did it take you to become addicted to sugar? Well, it's not going to be 3 or 4 weeks to become un-addicted, is it? You would expect it to take a little while.
I think it was around the 5 - 6 week mark before I could walk down the sweetie aisle and really say, I don't want that any more. Mind you I can't say the same for the coffee aisle, just managed to give up coffee, but haven't done the 'walk down the aisle' test yet....lol....

It was about 12 weeks before I became aware that my appetite control had kicked in. It was a gradual thing. I think everyone will have a different story, as we all handle sugar overload in a different way. But headaches seem to be a common thread. I had none, others had bad ones.

I wish you well on your low fructose way of life, keep it up, you can do it........Never give up.

Hey, thanks for the reply. Since I posted 'lethargic', Ive found more energy from somewhere! I reckon it was just the early stages - so I rested up and didn't plan much for weekends! I noticed appetite changes within a week, I guess like you said, everyone reacts differently!  I haven't been tempted at all by anything, maybe that will kick in at some point..... I havent altered what I was eating at all as I dont really eat a lot of carbs - no bread at all and a small portion of brown rice, OR a potato with protein (unlike my hubby, Ive never been a carb freak!). I only miss fruit and I used to eat a lot of that - maybe four portions a day!  Anyway, since quitting Ive lost 6kg (just over two weeks), I dont think its all down to being sugar free as, naturally I gave up wine as well - and when I had a tipple I also tucked into potato chips! Thanks for the support :)

Hi, Samantha, you're welcome, no problems, but boy, I remember devouring potato crisps, then I found almonds, eating too much bread, after over a year, now I am trying to do without, just to break the addiction to bread.  I've managed, after 14 months to give up coffee, and lost a lot of little lady complaints, they may have been small, but as a whole, made life not so nice, was very stressed. Now, with meditation and positive affirmations, my acne has all but gone, I always know when I'm stressed, as I get acne on the back of my neck, up into my hairline, ukky....it gets very itchy....I had to give up mushrooms, as it's a fungi, and not good for the candida I had for over 20 years, its almost gone now, I think dairy may be having a little impact their too.
You are lucky you weren't eating a lot of carbs, like me.  Before I started, I had already cut out all soft drinks, but was getting my sugar hits in the coffee, 5 sweeteners, 1/3rd of a stick of Nestle caramel coffee additive, on top, and a big slug of caramel topping in there too.

I found out gradually that it was the sugar I liked the coffee for, not the coffee itself, so now have tea, no milk, I like Earl Grey, or green tea, Jasmine. They say White Tea is extra good for you, even better that green tea.  I guess Twinings or someone must be gonna release a range of these, as I saw that in the Sunday paper.!!!

Good luck, there is a lot of help available here, and over on the Sweet Poison forum, we love to encourage others if we can.

    Love
