Three weeks ago gave up coffee and sugar at the same time, after reading Sweet Poison Diet Plan. Was very excited when I received the book in the mail, couldn't stop reading it. Any way had a massive headache for 2 days, but now I am fine. Can't believe I gave up coffee as normally had 6 cappacinos a day, and could never go shopping without buying a giant chocolate frog to eat on the way home in the car. The good news is I lost 3 kg in the first 10 days but now I have stopped loosing weight. Not to worried about that at the moment as am feeling great. I have 2 teenagers at home and am trying to cut out the amount of sugar they eat as my son wants to loose some weight. What I want to know is I have been making the ice-cream out Davids book so at least the kids can have dessert if they want and nearly all teenagers do. Is it better for them to eat the ice-cream made out dextrose than purchased ice-cream even if they are not 100% sugar free.  And when baking I would be better off sending them to school with cakes made out of dextrose wouldn't I .
As my son says he feels like he is putting on weight although I have thrown out all sugar in the house and now they have full-cream milk instead of juice. I know that David says not to eat dextrose until you are passed sugar withdrawal but it is hard to completely take them off sugar. I just want to make sure that cooking with dextrose will do them more good than harm, and it is a better choice than sugar.
And also with the ice-cream I have been making the old fashioned vanilla made with 2 whole eggs, but  I have been making the chocolate glaze recipe and adding this to the anglais when  I cook it. I don''t add the 1 cup of  dextrose to the anglais as find the chocolate glaze icing makes it sweet enough. It is yummy tastes like cocomalt ice-creams you buy.
Anyway if anyone has any thoughts on this  I would like to hear from you as I want to be able to make healthier treats for the kids to eat.
                                                            Cheers

    Hi Julie-Ann,

Can I suggest that your son feels like he is getting bigger by the fact that he now feels full more? I had that feeling in the 1st week or so.

Can't comment on the ice-cream issue. I've managed to go 4 weeks now (almost) and haven't wanted ice-cream at all.

    All the best.

What is it? If it tastes like the . . .  it probably has all the same gunk in it :-(  Check the sugar content.

Re dextrose in recipes, just double the amount of sucrose you would use -  1 cup sugar use 2 cups of dextrose.  The sweetness will be close to the same.

And remember, dextrose is NOT a low calorie sweetener.  It doesn't have the fructose, but eating treats made with it, is not a path to weight loss.  having them from time to time is a way to avoid sliding back in to sugar addiction.
