Hi All,
We have been slowly cutting out bad sugars/oils over the past few weeks and are about to begin the initial sugar free phase – I can’t wait to try some of the recipes and do some experimenting in a few weeks, I am a stay at home mum (with a 15 month old and a 3 year old) but was a chef for 15 years prior so this is going to be an interesting time! – luckily my kids have been eating fairly well and are young enough not to be addicted to softdrink, juice, chips etc.
I have found it quite interesting reading Davids 3 books, Christine Cronau’s and Sarah Wilsons books – there are several differing opinions and as lovely as it would be to go completely organic etc it is just too damn expensive - I would be interested in other people’s opinions who have also read these other books.
To make matters even more confusing our 3yr old has mild autism and it has been suggested that we try the “failsafe” diet (Sue Dengate)– this addresses the effects of preservatives, additives, amines & salicylates on children’s behaviour but interestingly enough the diets recommendations state that sugar in fine and recommend that only vegie oils are used! My thinking here is that we are all going sugar free (there are just too many reasons not to!), I am certain we will see positive results and then if need be I will try the elimination of certain foods as suggested by failsafe (still remaining sugar free of course!); I think the basic ethos of eating as natural as possible is the way to go.
My husband has also read the books and is completely on board – but is unsure how he will maintain being sugar free in the “real” world; I am interested to know of anyone else who has gone sugar free with young children (and husbands – they’re all the same really!) and the outcomes of how they have handled being sugar free in the real world! – work, school, friends’ houses, parties etc…
