I am an insulin diabetic, occasionally I can tell my blood sugar is getting low, that is heading for a hypo usually in middle of the night,my question is what is the best thing to have to overcome the low blood sugar .i used to carry a chocolate bar with me but recently changed to some raisins......I know they are very high in sugar and should be avoided but what is  the best option to have available .i realise that correcting the level of insulin  and having low GI foods during the day is the best way ,but there will still be occasions when a  sugar hit is needed .i would be interested in people's thoughts

I looked at a website for diabetics, and one of the things it suggests, is glucose tablets equivalent to 10–15 (two to three tablets).  Now, that tells me that glucose will solve it, without fructose.  If I were you, I'd try to make sweets using dextrose instead of sugar, or find some other way to have concentrated access to it ( in a pinch, is putting dextrose in water and drinking it not a viable solution ? )

For all that, if you're talking about a life threatening condition, I'd talk to a doctor before taking advice from strangers on the internet.  Explain that you are trying a sugar free diet, and ask if glucose alone will get you through a hypo, and THEN try to come up with a dextrose heavy solution.  You can also buy glucose syrup, if you wanted to make something with that, which you could eat.

I am a Diabetic Type 1 and I drink 250ml of full cream milk for a hypo (low blood sugar).  It takes a little longer than sugar to work, but hey, but it works and is fructose free.

PS:  I carry those little Devondale Tetra Paks in my handbag - only 200ml but it's a serve size
