If it's in a sauce, it's suspect.  Sweet chilli, sweet and sour, anything with 'sweet' in the name, doubly so.  Any BBQ sauce, heaps of sugar.  Spring rolls, dim sum, all fine.  High end chinese, perhaps fine.  The corner chinese store, probably not much without sugar.

Actually over on the free forum site there has been a great post about chinese foods http://sweetpoison.myfreeforum.org/about2217.html.  What I actually thought was the best choice being braised chicken and veges is probably not that good after all.  Omelettes are good along with soups.

I lovvvveeee satay chicken! Traditional mongolian beef and a lot of other sauces aren't supposed to have much sguar in it, however to make it more tasty they add heaps of sugar.  I've had a look on some websites and it's all up and down really.

At the end of the day, when you don't cook it yourself, you lose control, so the best bet is both to be careful what you order, and not do it too often.

Oh, I do most of the cooking, so I know just what you mean.  I also travel a lot for work, so I eat out more than I would like, and have got pretty good at looking for a grilled meat option with no sauces, which is really the only thing you can trust, IMO.

ahhh sounds so boring - grilled meat and no sauce or gravy lol.  I just got the Big Fat Lie from the library today so Im going to read it - there goes the rest of the food I loved I can just tell :P

Big Fat Lies basically adds vegetable oils, like cottonseed oil, to the mix.  Basically all the oils that get the heart foundation tick, and are in most processed foods.

Mustards are usually OK.  I will have mustard with my meat, or sometimes chilli jam, made with my own chillis.  It has some palm sugar in it, but I eat so little, because it's so hot, that I think it's OK.  I put butter on my veggies.  I am yet to try to make a hollandaise sauce, but I will try.  I'll also try for a sugar free tartare.

One thing I love, is salmon fried with a mixture of mascapone and wasabi.  There's all sorts of ways to dress up a piece of meat that don't involve a sugar heavy sauce.
