Hi everyone, I'm a newbie to this, and although I didnt really set out to cut out all sugar, just sweet junk food like chocolate and cake etc, I see after reading the book the message is I can't pick and choose. I am about a week into it and today somone left a mini cupcake on my desk at work. I was doing fine, good even until this. I looked at the mini cupcake from the morning tea, a morning tea that I set up for the office every month and have never even been phased by the cupcakes before (I'm in the habit of eating very well during the week) and after 10min of looking at it and thinking about it I devoured it! I never would have done that last month, I would have just given it to someone else and said I didn't feel like it.. I feel really bad for the slip up and now think should I even bother and is this actaully going to work on me. I only have about 3-5kgs to lose, love exercising and eat very well in all other areas but find myself drawn to sugary foods like chocolate and biscuits when I want to relax or when I'm emotional etc but always go over board which is what led me to the book.....any words of wisdom from people who have seen results? or maybe people who haven't? Thanks!

    Hello Joanne and welcome
sugar is an addiction which is why we get drawn to "sugary foods" particularly when we want to relax or are emotional. And we all go overboard too.

I have been sugar free for eighteen months now and after initially losing all the weight I wanted to, which in my case has been 15kilos, I have continued because of the benefits to my health. The more I read and hear, the more I realise that sugar is an addictive toxin and I don't want it in my body.
I am also mostly a savoury eater now and eat the dextrose sweetened deserts only rarely, on special occasions. I feel much healthier in myself........my thinking is clearer, my skin is glowing, I have lost a lot of arthritic pain, and my hair is shinier. These are the outward signs I have noticed, hopefully my inner organs are all benefiting too. Also, I used to suffer from a bit of depression which I don't now.

Sugar has been linked with many of the diseases which seem to be reaching plague proportions in our society today. Obesity and type 2 diabetes being the most obvious ones, it's now linked to many cancers, heart and liver disease and even alsheimers.

Watch Dr. Lustig, an american scientist as he gives this excellent lecture on sugar and its ills, it lasts for one and a half hours and, if you have the time, do have a listen, you can link to this below:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBnniua6-oM

I went cold turkey when I gave up sugar and did go through a withdrawal period of craving sugar which after a few weeks passed. Now I can sit with my family, all of whome, except my husband still eat sugar and watch them eating deserts and sweets and not feel anything at all.

I can only say to you..............give this a serious try and you may be surprised at the results. Whether your body needs to lose a bit of weight or not, you will certainly find results in other ways.
And it can only benefit your health.
    cheers
    Freda

    Hi Joanne

First of all, if your prime goal is weight loss, you're missing the point.  Even if your body doesn't put on weight right now from sugar, the sugar is still having an impact on your health.  You shouldn't decide how much you 'want' to lose, you should just cut out sugar, get over the addiction, and see what weight your body settles down to when your appetite is under control.  Having a cup cake in front of you is bad news, the first thing I did, was get all sugar out of the house.  If I lived in a house full of lollies, I probably would not succeed.  That's the same logic as trying to be faithful to your wife, but hanging around bars buying drinks for women and chatting them up.  Get rid of the temptation, but still expect to slip here and there.  It's up to you if one slip means total failure, or a lesson learned on how to do better next time.

Me, I lost 10 kg in a month, 6 kg the second, and have kept it off despite not being 100% sugar free, all the time ( I travel for work and it's impossible, I just do the best I can when I am away from home ).  I feel a lot better, and it's effortless, before I craved snacks all the time, now I am always full.

Emotional eating is a real trap, because it's not driven by actual desire for food.  The best thing there is to replace food with something else, because everyone has emotions, you can't just ignore them, but you have to deflect from dealing with them with food.

It works for everyone who will do it, you may lose more or less weight than me, or take longer to get over the addiction, but we're all human, we all have bodies that can't process fructose, and we all would feel better without it.

    Good luck !!!

Someone else posted the Dr Lustig videos "The Skinny on Obesity" or it may have be you. Anyway I have been watching them and am very impressed. He explains it so well.

I like his theory on Lepid and Insulin and I was wondering if any one knows that if you cut out the sugar will your body so back to normal and make the lepid hormone work properly again ?
