Is is alright to have cocoa powder mixed with milk ? What does it taste like without any sugar ?

I have been sugar free for 10 days now. I miss having dessert after dinner and used to have fruit, but as I eat fruit earlier in the day I don't  have any allowance left at night.

Sometimes I have yoghurt but thought I would try cocoa and milk.

    Hello Miriam and welcome
I have cocoa and full cream milk without sweetener when I feel like a chocolate fix. It raises my serotonin levels, which is probably why I like chocolate so much!

It tastes fine............you just have to try it to find out.......I actually use organic cocoa.........."Cacao" - from my health food shop as it has a much stronger flavour of chocolate.

And apparently because it's extracted without heating, Cacao contains all the minerals which get baked out of supermarket cocoa............anyway, I like it because it tastes better.

Some people use Stevia or even Dextrose with it, but I felt I would rather be a savoury person than keep on having things sweetened.

    Again.........it's up to you.

David recommends, in the early days of sugar withdrawal, not to use dextrose until the appetite control kicks in, which takes different times for different people. He also puts Stevia in the "your call" column with the artificial sweeteners in "The Sweet poison quit plan"

Good luck with your journey, do let us know how you get on, especially with the cocoa.
    cheers
    Freda

I recently found a sugar-free drinking chocolate, sweetened with natvia which is a variant of stevia, which is OK I believe.. The brand is "Vitarium"  and I bought it in Woolworths for about $5 for 200g. It is also gluten/nut/wheat/egg/yeast/gmo -free if any of that interests you :-)

Sugar content 0.10% fat 1.21%. No nasty sweeteners or artificial colours or flavours.

Ingredients are: natvia, cocoa (10%), emulsifier (soy lechitin), salt.

Actually they have quite a range of similar products: http://www.vitarium.com.au/vitarium-products.html

It doesn't taste all that wonderful, but it IS sugar-free.

    Enjoy!

I'm quite lazy I add boiling water in my cocoa and put some milk in it (kinda like making a coffee or tea), I use 2 heaped teaspoons of cocoa and about 1 small teaspoon of dextrose... tastes wonderful!  I also make chocolate milk, mix some cocoa with a little hot water (to disolve it a little), and add some cold milk, tastes great and doesn't need dextrose in my opinion.

Thanks Freda and John for your prompt replies.

I can't wait to have a hot chocolate now.

I will also buy some organic cacao powder to try.

I have been sugar free for nearly 2 weeks.

When does the withdrawal period end ? I am taking Chronium supplements for sugar balance or cravings. I don't whether I should be taking these.

I am findinf it hard to reconcile myself with the full fat food. I used to eat as lot of fruit so now I am having 50 grams of hard cheese a day for a morning snack and sometimes half an advacodo for an afternoon snack.

I used to do Weight Watcher Points and the points for these items are so high, but I am haning in there.

    Hello Miriam
it's hard to say when the withdrawal will end.........it's different for everyone. I found that after about a month, I had stopped craving sugar, so that must be when mine ended.
I also found that if I was what I called "mouth hungry" which is when you're not hungry but looking for something to put in there..............I would have a full fat drink of unsweetened cocoa or a small full fat yoghurt, often these put paid to that annoying craving.
I don't know about taking chromium, I've never taken it myself. I only take a spoonful of coconut oil daily to help my insides work and one cod liver oil supplement, which I probably don't need anyway!

It is hard to reconcile oneself with eating full fat food, but once the appetite control kicks in, our bodies decide how much fat we need anyway.

    cheers

I tried the cocoa powder with milk last night.

It wasn't very nice. It had a grainy taste. I did mix the powder with boiled water to dilute, then added the milk and put in the microwave to heat up.

Is there a better way to make it. It wasn't sweet but I didn't mind that, it was the grainy texture that I objected to.

    Hello Miriam
when I make the drink, I mix the powder with a bit of cold milk until it forms a paste, then add boiling water and top up with more cold milk to bring it to drinking temperature, I don't use cocoa, but cacao, I don't know if that makes any difference but I don't notice a grainy taste.
    cheers

I have been having cocoa and full fat milk since I started my new way of life without sugar.  I microwave the milk and then add the cocoa.  I love the taste and and I'm losing weight so win/win. I haven't noticed any grainy taste or texture.
