Does anyone know if there are any good no or low sugar Ricotta Cheese brands?  Am I correct in assuming that ricotta will have the usual 4.7 grams of lactose in every 100 grams of product like other dairy products?

I'm thinking that maybe you are confused about things here... lactose is perfectly ok and it would be impossible to find any ricotta - in fact any dairy product - which does not contain lactose.  So long as you buy plain Ricotta you can't go wrong.

    Hi Sanda

thanks for the reply.  I just am confused about ricotta as although the ingredients list itself doesn't list sugar, most have a certain amount of sugar listed per 100 grams on the nutrition panel.  I am assuming this must be the lactose, would that be right?

The 4.7% as OK is referred to by David in relation to yoghurts. I also assume the same would be true for any dairy product.

The only thing you need to watch for is "low-fat" products which have had the flavour removed along with the fat and replaced with sugar and salt.

And of course a lot of dairy products have fruit added to make them more attractive, and that is all fructose.

Basically you need to read the labels and avoid anything with more than 5% "sugars" for dairy products, and 2% for everything else.

Yes, the sugar in the nutrition panel has to be lactose as there is no sugar listed in the ingredients.  This applies to all "plain" dairy products, ie ones with no added flavours.
