How Much Sugar?

    I am keen for a suggestion for an alternative to honey. Managing the sugar free is going well, however I am not sure of what is ok to use instead of honey or dextrose.

    Hi Sandra,

    We use Rice Malt Syrup. It can be purchased in a jar with a white plastic lid in the health food section at coles for about $3.50ish. I think it's called Organics Rice Malt Syrup or something similar. It tastes surprisingly like honey, my kids (4 & 20 months) are even happy to have it as 'honey' sandwich's or on pancakes. They also love it with their weetbix and milk in the mornings. There's quite a few recipes about that use it as a sweetner as well.

    It's not as sweet as runny honey. But it looks the same and is the best substitute I've been able to find.

    Better check the sweetener being used. Some of them are worse than fructose :-(

    Um, Sugar free maple syrup sounds like a contradiction in terms to me.............rather like "sugar free honey"
    I would have thought that any maple syrup, sugar free or not, would be mostly fructose, rather like agarve syrup.
    Rice malt syrup is all glucose, doesn't have any artificial sweeteners and my husband has it on his toast for breakfast in place of honey and doesn't miss the honey.

    You might want to check the ingredients list on your sugar free maple syrup.  just because something says it's sugar free unfortunately doesn't mean to say we can eat it because most of the time it will contain another sweetner which is just as harmful as sugar.  Are you using the Queen brand sugar free maple syrup?  I've checked on their website and here is the ingredients:

    Water, Sorbitol, Vegetable Gum: Sodium Carboxymethyl Cellulose (466); Flavouring: Natural Maple Flavours; Salt, Acidity Regulator: Citric Acid; Colouring: Caramel Colour (150d); Preservatives: Potassium Sorbate (202), Sodium Benzoate (211); Sweetener: Sucralose.

    On Davids list, Sorbitol is lised under bad, the sweetener sucralose is an artifical sweetner and is under your call.  Probably best to avoid this as Sorbitol is the second in the ingredient list.
