    Dear David.
For some reason I can not find Dextrose in the shops. Do you know if this is a conspiracy by the sugar companies ??. I have hunted in all the supermarkets to no avail. If you have time would you care to call me on 3333 2168 ?  Cheers Geraldine Kennedy  (Marnies Mum)

I found it at Kmart in the brewers section near the lollies and soda stream.  Also look up local home brew shops near you.  Now I am cooking with it I think it is cheaper in bulk from the brewer shops.

I also found it in Big W, in the home brewing section. Big W has the whole Cooper's range.

    Hi all,

I find dextrose as Glucodin powder or tablets and Rice malt Pureharvest brand is a liquid glucose and maltose- fructose free. I get it in chemists and some supermarkets- Ritchies most consistantly.

I use the powder for cooking. The tablets are handy in my handbag for sugar cravings or just when I feel like something sweet and fruit is unavailable. I have only used the rice malt on bread- I ate too much of it by the spoon.

You'll find that most of the stores are actually getting rid of their home brew section completely.  Most people have found it in woolies which is where I have found it.  Otherwise you can just go to a home brew store which is where my inlaws have found it still around the 1kg for $3 mark.

I would like to know a little more about Dextrose. I purchased a pkt of Dextrose from a brewing shop for baking purposes. The label says "DEXTROSE" but underneath it says "Fermentable Brewing Sugar.  Also known as Corn Sugar or Glucose".  I know glucose and corn sugar are ok, but I thought I read in David's book that Brewing Sugar is 75% sugar?  Now I am not sure if I should be using it!!  Can anyone shed some more light?  Thanks

So the Dextrose from Big W brewing section is ok, but the Brewer's Sugar isn't?

I, too found it in Big W, Rockdale Plaza in Sydney, (don't know where you are). It was in the home brew section, & cost sround $4.00 a kilo.

I think we have all decided Rice Malt Syrup is ok as a substitute for golden syrup, honey, maple syrup or brown sugar to some extent, but i wouldn't use any of it other than in baking/cooking. Although someone out there likes it on their Oatmeal (porridge) for brekky.  Can't quite remember who, Bron, maybe , or Janelle??

Haven't got the packet any more for the Dextrose, though, so can't remember what was on it.

    Good luck,

If your normal supermarket doesn't stock it, you could ask them to get it in, letting them know you'll buy it regularly. Here, IGA has it, Coles doesn't and Woolies does. (I hate Woolies so it almost killed me to buy it from them when my IGA ran out).

When people suddenly start buying a product that usually sells slowly, it can take a little while for the computer to catch up and increase the order.
