Read the labels on the tins and packages, they tell you how much sugar there is in the product. David says that under 4% is ok, but I have just bought Wattle Valley Hommus (from Franklins, if you have one) which has only 1gram per 100 grams in it, that is only a mere 1%.........not bad eh?
With chick peas and beans, if there is added sugar, it's in the liquid they float in and simply rinsing the beans well gets rid of it. Of course, you can buy the dried ones and soak overnight, nothing added there, but you would have to cook them.
