With Easter fast approaching can anyone give me some ideas on subsitutions for chocolate eggs? What does Easter bunny bring instead??

What should I say to my family to get them NOT to give chocolate to my toddler? What could they give her instead?

What about a fluffy bunny toy for her.  Fluffy slippers.  Just tell them they are welcome to buy a toy or a book, but no chocolates please as she has a bad reaction to chocolate.  I think if they have the option to give some sort of present to her it should help.

When we were kids we had a shared ritual with Swiss friends - our parents hard boiled eggs, and once the eggs were  cold we decorated them with non toxic paint and placed them in little baskets of straw. On Easter Sunday we visited the friends and the eggs were "battled" knocking them end to end until a winner, the strongest egg was found. We got to eat them next, dipping them into a bowl of salt. We loved this as it was fun, creative  and sociable.

I "coddle" hardboiled eggs this way (you don't get that green layer on the yolk this way!)... put eggs in a pot and cover with water and bring to the boil. As soon as the water bubbles in a strong way take off the heat and put a lid on the pot. Time 10 minutes and tip out the hot water, replace with cold water. Leave till the eggs are cold. Dry and get paint ready.

You could bake dextrose easter treats too of course. I seem to remember a marshmallow recipe that contained glucose syrup, we used to try marshmallow eggs made at home....the big thing with easter is to crate a memorable ritual with fun and good tastes for everyone....things like dressing up specially, decorations on the table, get kids to draw Easter cards.  Ask family to help out with some dextrose treats like Gingerbread Easter bunny biscuits, and see if they can help you to figure out the new tricks to baking with a new ingredient...  make it fun, but also achievable... as a parent YOU don't want to be overwhelmed :)

Why does easter have to be about chocolate?  We actually do presents but this year I think we might try painting our own eggs (getting the kids into crafts).  Also if they do insist on buy chocolate why not tell them to get the good stuff like the 70%, yes it still may contain sugar but it's no way near as bad as the other cheap stuff.  You can also make chocolate treats as well, or make some crafts like bunny ears, easter doesn't need to be about chocolate.

there is a case for kids having a small amount of chocolate at Easter, but not those massive quantities over several weeks around Easter...have you noticed how early and late Easter supplies run in supermarkets? I think to have a choc egg on Easter Sunday ONLY and know how it fits the Easter story in all it's Christian/pagan glory, and have the kids learn about that is fine. We always had hot cross buns only on Good Friday and Chocolate eggs on the Sunday. That limits things really well.

Thanks for all the great ideas. I'll just have to get the message accross that  we aren't eating chocolate anymore. Although I do like the idea of allowing one egg on Easter Sunday - it will probably taste so sweet and sickly that she won't want it all the time.

Hmmm, I do remember as a child camping many times at Easter - that would take us away from all the chocolate!
