When we were kids we had a shared ritual with Swiss friends - our parents hard boiled eggs, and once the eggs were cold we decorated them with non toxic paint and placed them in little baskets of straw. On Easter Sunday we visited the friends and the eggs were "battled" knocking them end to end until a winner, the strongest egg was found. We got to eat them next, dipping them into a bowl of salt. We loved this as it was fun, creative and sociable.
I "coddle" hardboiled eggs this way (you don't get that green layer on the yolk this way!)... put eggs in a pot and cover with water and bring to the boil. As soon as the water bubbles in a strong way take off the heat and put a lid on the pot. Time 10 minutes and tip out the hot water, replace with cold water. Leave till the eggs are cold. Dry and get paint ready.
You could bake dextrose easter treats too of course. I seem to remember a marshmallow recipe that contained glucose syrup, we used to try marshmallow eggs made at home....the big thing with easter is to crate a memorable ritual with fun and good tastes for everyone....things like dressing up specially, decorations on the table, get kids to draw Easter cards. Ask family to help out with some dextrose treats like Gingerbread Easter bunny biscuits, and see if they can help you to figure out the new tricks to baking with a new ingredient... make it fun, but also achievable... as a parent YOU don't want to be overwhelmed :)
