It occured to me the other day that the vitamins we take, and give our kids, may have fructose in them. So I did some research. We take:

Natures Way - Kids Smart Omega 3: no fructose or sweetners
Blackmores - Kids Multi: contains sweeteners from Sucralose (artificial sweetener) and Sucralose (sugar alcohol sweetener )
Elevit - Women's Multi: still waiting for a response

David, what do you think about the Sucralose and Sucralose? Should we look for alternatives?

Sally ... I'm yet to see convincing research that taking any of these things (the vitamins I mean) benefits anyone (other than the folks selling them).  But if you want to take them, I'd be looking for unsweetened ones rather than ones sweetened with sucralose (not that I think its bad in small doses, but there is no long term consumption data).

    Hope that helps?

    Cheers

    David.

    Hi David,

We have finished the multivitamins and I haven't bought anymore. The fish oil, on the other hand, is only half was finished so we have a way to go. I am confused as to whether my son should be taking them. He has Aspergers and from the information we have received, correct or advertising, there is still part of me who thinks that it must help. Aargh information overload!

Might I say, since Aspergers is very much about rules and right and wrong my 11 year old is now a Sweet Poison ambassador. He is more than happy to tell whoever will listen the benefits of having a fructose free diet. The rules say you must not have fructose in your diet so my lovely boy was actually able to say no to an offering from a friend in the playground the other day. I asked him why he say no, and his answer was, "because it had fructose in it, and anyway Mum, I was full, my appetite control is working".
We worked out the other day that at playtime there is at least half a kilo of sugar going into little bodies at school. I asked him how the kids behaved after recess and he said they were nuts. It has been a real eye opening.

Hi thumbguard, I saw on the TV early this morning that vitamins have been proven to be useless to us, that we get all we need from the food we eat. My view is, what about all the people who don't eat all those fruit/veg & foods etc for one reason or another? Surely they must help a bit?  The fish oil capsules are ok  though, so please don't stop those. If anyone is suffering from dry skin, take fish oil, just makes sure the brand you buy is Mercury tested. I take the fish oil & my usually dry skin isn't dry anymore, in fact I had to cut back on it a bit. I take it for my arthritis. I am still going to continue with the vitamins, though, as when I stop them, I notice my knee hurts a lot more than when I take them. Also my partner tells me that if he stops taking his, he starts to get more colds. So, I guess they must be helping, somehow. Plus I'm a healer, so if it isn't the pills that help my knee, what is helping it? doing healing on myself hasn't ever helped me, even tho' I can help others.
Sorry if I'm confusing you even more. I'd be doing my research on-line, looking for clinical trials that involve more than just a handful of people. If you do, please share it with us!!
Your little boy is a real testament to the way you have brought him up, the little possum, out of the mouths of babes, I say. What a terrific little boy.  Good luck with it all.  Blessings
