    Hi.

Just found this website in au for sugar free confectionary and they include carob and chocolate.

The site is: http://www.lewisconfectionery.com.au/buds.html and the ingredients they list are:

"No Added Sugar Carob ( less than 4% natural sucrose )
Low-Fat Milk Solids, Palm Kernel Oil, Carob Solids, Emulsifier (Soy Lecithin).

    No Added Sugar Chocolate
Low-Fat Milk Solids, Palm Kernel Oil, Cocoa Powder, Cocoa Mass, Emulsifier (Soy Lecithin).

    NUTRITIONAL

    ANALYSIS per 100 gm:

    Energy 1828 Kj

    Protein 15 gm

    Fat Total 32 gm

    Saturated 32 gm

    Carbohydrate 42 gm

    Sugars 37 gm

    Water 3 gm

    Sodium 135 mg

    Potassium 327 mg"

How come the sugar per 100gm is 37gm? It does say lactose products- are they all from these and is it okay?

If , on that site, you go to the download and it then lists everything, which seems good.

Looks ok, but you could email the manufacturer to find out if the sugar listed is actually lactose.  Also you might want to read up about palm kernel oil http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-palm-kernel-oil.htm

I did email the manufacturer and got the info needed, and some products do seem fructose free. No sweeteners used either.

I found some of the Lewis confectionary products today in the local healthfood shop. I had researched the ingredients, and got some NAS peppermint chocolate, coconut rough, and yoghurt buttons. They had many sugar/fruit products, so be aware and careful.

Seems definately no sweetness! I have had the peppermint one so far. The initial taste is unsweet....but becomes pleasant, that melt in the back of the mouth satisfaction definately leaves you wanting more. The mint oil makes the flavour natural and yummy.

So, I recommend this for us sugarfree? Sugar eaters would say its foul, I'm sure!

There was orange and strawberry flavoured NAS chocolate- the flavours coming from 'orange oil' and 'strawberry oil'. I decided against these, as I thought they might contain fructose. Any knowledge on that, anyone?

    So...check your healthfood store :)

i don't think the oils would contain fructose (and it would be such a tiny bit if it did) - the oil of orange is quite strong and almost bitter. no idea how they'd get oil of strawberry though.

palm oil isn't very good for you, and is probably the worst of all the oils (used because it is the cheapest).

A Quick Note about Carob: It is not a sugar free alternative to Chocolate but is often sold that way.

Carob is often sold as the no-sugar alternative to chocolate, but what they mean is no cane sugar (or HFCS) has been added to carob.  And while that is (usually) true, it omits an essential piece of information.

The reason no sugar is added is because carob powder is naturally high in fructose (so no sugar is needed).  Carob can be up to 16% fructose (equivalent to 32% sucrose) which puts it pretty squarely in the range of a traditional chocolate recipe with sugar added.  Because of that, I avoid suggesting carob as an alternative to chocolate.

The no added sugar chocolate look like it might be ok.  Here's the detail: http://www.lewisconfectionery.com.au/download/NAS%20CHOC%20PLAIN%20BLOCK.pdf

Milk solids are about 40% lactose, so that lines up nicely with the 37% sugars listed.
