I have been sugar free (I did not have a lot of sugar because of migraine anyway) for 18 months now, mainly because I was a borderline cholesterol case.  At the end of May, I was put on Lipitor - I have not lost weight, and cholesterol was over 6. I am about 10 kg overweight, my husband 20.  We had been using low-fat margarine, milk and cheese (I went to WeightWatchers 2004-5 and lost 18 kg, but obviously put most of it back on).  After reading Sweet Poison and the followup, we went back onto butter and full cream milk and cheese, but put on weight.  So once again we are using fat reduced Nuttelex, cheese and milk.  John has started riding to work, which is a 3 k ride, and does this 2 or 3 times a day depending on shifts.  John has been taking Blood Pressure medication for about 12 months (he had a knee replacement in Feb, so exercise had been difficult)  I have started walking half-hour at least 5 times a week. I don't think the appetite control is working.  We really do not know what to do - I do not really want to go to a dietician, but what we are trying to do ourselves does not seem to be working.  I am 65 and John 63.

So you have cut out the hidden sugars too?  Are you following the Sweet Poison recommendations fully?  Sorry, I just wanted to check you are not just cutting out sugars that you add, because that's what some people I've talked to mean when they say they are giving up sugar.

When I lost weight I counted calories and did food groups through Wesley Weight Management, then I found a free site online which does virtually the same thing, but is a lot easier as it does it all for you.  It's called calorieking.com.au

I find I can't rely on my appetite control completely, after years of being a binge-eater, so I still count calories for maintenance.

The other thing is, you may find you are like some here who need to cut carbohydrates, particularly refined ones, in order to lose weight.

Thanks, Nadine.  I have cut out the hidden sugars too - no sauces etc etc etc - becomes so uninteresting sometimes!  2 fruit. Husband John was called back to the dr today after his last blood test, and he is on the verge with cholesterol too - and the dr recommended calorieking.com.au to lose weight, so I will get into that site.  For some reason, sugar/fructose free alone is not enough for us.

Like Nadine I also use CK and have for about 3 yrs now.  It makes it so much easier to work out just how  many calories I'm eating.   I chose to buy the program ($44.95) so that I could have it on my computer and be able to use it even when I don't have access to the internet.  You can also have more than one user so you could also track your hubby's food if you want.

I'm 66 and about 3 yrs ago developed high blood pressure and cholesterol was up too.  Dr wanted to put me on meds but I asked if I could have 3 months to try and work it out without the meds.  Anyway, joined CK and started walking everday for at least 30 minutes.  All good now and well within normal limits for BP and cholesterol.  I'm much fitter and have far fewer health issues thanks to losing that 26kg, and eating healthier.  I spend more time on food preparation but that's ok if I don't have to take medication. I still walk 5-7 days a week but do about 1hr as I actually like it.
