I just bought some Fountain tomato sauce in Coles today,  which is promoting significantly reduced sugar levels...but it has Thaumatin listed as the sweetener...I have never heard of it...but on doing an internet search found it to be a protein from an african berry???...haven't actually tasted the sauce yet, but wanted to know more about the thaumatin...safety ?? effects in the body??  Anyone know??

Hey, Julie, I hadn't heard of it, so looked it up, like you did. I found this link to 'Bakers asthma', link here:-

I guess it's a your call thing. Can I be invited to your funeral if you eat it & pass over?  lol....I know, not funny, just trying to lighten the mood a bit...

I gave up tomato sauce when I went fructose free, too much sugar. Why don't you try making your own?
I use either tinned tomatoes or the jars of Italian tomato sugo sauces, for bulk cooking, it's all tomatoes, just check the labels. But, in saying that, tomatoes do have a natural sugar content.

Good luck with it all, it's a bit of a minefield, isn't it?
