I wonder if somebody can help me. I have read both of Davids books, been sugar free for 6 weeks now and coping fairly well but am a bit confused on the area of dextrose.

I understand that you substitute dextrose for sugar, thats fine but David makes it clear not to start using dextrose until sugar free. Sooo why is it okay to make a cake for example with dextrose and then feed it to people who are not sugar free ? I must be missing something but I don't get that part at all. All my family members including young grand children eat regular sugar. Is it okay to feed them dextrose ?

Would appreciate any advice on this matter.

    Many thanks.

Hi Lynn, I think David is trying to get us off all sugar first then if we want to have sweet things use dextrose powder instead of white crystal sugar

Your grandchildren won't worry what sugar is in the cakes as long as it tastes nice and you will be doing them a favour particularly if they want to know about. If they change when they are young they will automatically look for alternatives when they grow up.

Dextrose is fine for everyone it's just a different type of sugar, the stuff our grand parents and great grand parents used before they big conglomorants fiddled with it

I have just had a go at making ice cream with dextrose and while I actually mucked up the making of it, not the recipe, it tasted quite good.  Will be doing some modifications and it should end up being a hit with everyone.

Keep up the good work, we all need to take it easy and find what suits us best. hope this has been helpful

    Cheers

    Hello Lynette

what David says is that while you are not completely sugar free, then the dextrose will have the same effect on your blood sugar and lipid levels as sugar does. But once the fructose has stopped mucking our systems up, we can have dextrose and it won't have that effect.

With people who are not sugar free, It doesn't matter which they have. Dextrose won't harm them, if that's what your are worrying about.

    cheers

I didn't think he meant that at all Freda.  Dextrose will never metabolise like fructose or sucrose.

It's just that when you are withdrawing and craving something sweet you may go overboard on dextrose.

Dextrose has calories and isn't quite as sweet as sugar so you'll get too many calories and put on weight.

Which is why it's ok to have dextrose once your appetite control has kicked in.

Has anyone had a go at making yogurt.

I was recently given a yogurt maker for my birthday. Have made up the Easiyo brand & the Hansells brand Greek style/ unsweetened yogurt.

Was told they were fructose free.

    Are they?
