Please could you help me?   I'm just a 'newie'.   Today is my first day on the program and so far going quite well.

Re the Figure 2.5 in the book, on page 108...  There are 2 bars on the left hand side.   Is the first column the t/spoons of sugar and the 2nd column for the t/spoons of Fructose?

Also, I am a fruit lover and realize that I must cut down drastically.   How do I calculate 10g of fructose in for example, a Mango or Lychee: how much fiber do they have and,  can I use Psylliam as extra fiber when consuming fruit.

    Is sweetcorn OK to eat?

Thank you so much for your help.

Hey, Bruna, welcome to the forum, & congrats on making the decision to change your life.

The first column on the left is the percentage of fructose in the fruit, the second, (shaded) one is the percentage of sugar, no teaspoons involved.  I think you will find that when David talks about percentages, he means percentage of sugar or fructose  per 100 grams of the product, whatever it is. Looking at the chart then we are looking at the fruits with the most fibre, and the least fructose and /or sugar, so anything on or below the '3' line on the left is considered ok, but the further to the right it is, the more fibre it has.
Does that make sense?  I hope so, not sure if I could explain it another way  !!  lol.....

When you are looking at packaging on more processed foods, you should be looking at the far right hand column, the 'per 100 gram (or mls) of the product, looking down to the sugars, take your eye over to that far right column and if it shows more than '6', then consider not buying it. But do look in the ingredients list, to see if there are any added sugars, or if the sugar is from lactose, in which case, it's ok. EG. a can of tomatoes may show a high percentage of sugars, but if the ingredients show only tomatoes, then that's ok, as they are naturally sweet. Just don't go using 2 tins in a small dish you are cooking, one would be enough.

It's a bit tricky, but you will soon get used to it. Practise makes perfect. Print out a copy of the different additives, ie, sweeteners, and keep in your wallet/purse, so you can refer to it. Mind you, it's pretty easy, I think. Stevia & Xylitol are the only sweeteners I would use. Natvia is made from Stevia, but developed for coffee drinkers, I find that Stevia has a bit of an aftertaste. But I guess the thing is to give up all sugar/sweeteners right at the beginning, try to give up the coffee/tea etc until you can cope with the taste of it without anything sweet in it. It's taken me about 17 months to give up coffee, because I didn't commit at the beginning. This is all with the benefit of hindsight, really, but I guess it all comes down to how much you really want to change.

In about 13 months, I lost 19 kilos, and have been stuck since then. I need now to cut out simple carbs for a few weeks, to kick start it again, I'm finding it a bit difficult. I guess my cravings will go away after a bit, I hope......as I have another 20 kilos to lose...sigh....

I wish you well on your journey, any more questions, just ask, & keep us up to date with your progress, so we can continue to encourage you.......lots of lovely helpful people here & over on the Sweet Poison Forum only too willing to help you with the benefit of their experiences to date, there is always someone who is having similar problems, believe me......lol....

    Hi Sylvia,

Thank you so very much for your quick reply.  You have explained the sugar content of processed goods very well.   I had been wondering about the new 'Roadies Savory Biscuits'.   They have the sugar content as the 7th ingredient but when looking at the ave qty per 100gms it was 1.4g which is well under the 6, so would be safe to have a few...(just a little snack - for the satisfying of the soul!!)

Re: the mango and lychees - not sure what the sugar/fiber rating is on them is.   I notice that in the forum a couple of times - going to Google was mentioned.   Please could you give me a clue on what to enter to go to the correct site?   Would just love to try it out myself.

Also, re the Psyllium, to give extra fiber to the fruit.   If taken with the fruit - will it help to add fiber to the fruit?   (Actually, psyllium is a must for me - to keep me regular).

Once again thank you so much for all your help.

    Best regards Bruna

    Hello Bruna and welcome.
Actually the lowest amount of sugar contained in any product bought from the shelves of the supermarket should be only 3 gms per 100 gms (3%) not 6 grams. That means it's 1.5 glucose and 1.5 fructose.

This is what is recommended by David in both his books.

As for fruit, David says two pieces of fruit a day is recommended. And no, psylim won't help. Take it by all means to keep you regular, but the fiber has to be inside the fruit, you can't add fiber and think it will help. Mango and lychees, as well as paw paw, pineapple, soft fruits and apples are very sweet and that is how you can judge the amount of fructose in them, just like grapes.

The best kind of fruit, according to David, are berries...............blueberries, raspberries, strawberries and blackberries. These are not as sweet as the tropical and soft fruits. Also pears and kiwi fruit are ok. So it's up to you to judge how many strawberries are equal to two pears. I eat half a punnet of blueberries as my two serves of fruit per day.

Somewhere on the Sweet Poison Facebook site, there is an article which tells us that fruit was used in the Autumn to fatten up cattle and humans for the long winter ahead. So, fruit, two pieces a day, is a luxury for us!

It's also a good idea to be cautious how much carbohydrate we eat, again, on the Sweet Poison Facebook site, it's mentioned that for some people who've had a lot of fructose, carbs can be a real problem and prevent good weight loss. I eat mostly protein meals, and I feel a lot better for it. I make David's dextrose treats for my husband who doesn't have a weight problem but a non sugar diet keeps his cholesterol and sugar readings down. I sometimes have a rare (very) treat.

Wishing you well with your journey

    cheers
    Freda

Oh, God, Freda, I did it again, didn't I!!  Sorry Bruna, I've got it here in my head that it's 6 grams and it's really 3 grams per 100 grams.

I'll try, really really hard not to do it again, Naughty....slap......Naughty........slap......girl!!!!

Please forgive me!! I don't buy processed foods any more, so rarely have to read labels any more.

    Hi Freda,

Have been sugar free for 3 weeks now and have had a few hiccups but happy to say that I've lost 2kgs.
I'm craving something sweet!   Do you have an ice-cream recipe that can be made without a machine?... Sigh.... I don't have one.

Also, could you please tell me, the max amount of sugar/fructose permitted in a day?

    Thank you so much.

I saw in the Donna Hay mag where she suggested making a no-machine ice-cream using her basic semifreddo recipe. Just substitute dextrose for the sugar and experiment. Otherwise the ones on this site say they can be made without a machine, I can personally vouch for the taste of the mocha one.
