Oil for the barbeque

    We normally use olive oil for cooking on the barbeque, but it tends to get a bit smokey.  We've been told that peanut oil or rice bran oil are better alternatives.  After buying a bottle of rice bran oil, I've now just read an excerpt from David's new book "Big Fat Lies" and am wondering what to do with this oil...maybe use it for oiling timber or something!  Anyway, is peanut oil any better or are we back to the olive oil and just turning the fan up higher??

    You probably need high-melting-point oils. These include include canola oil among others . .  see http://missvickie.com/howto/spices/oils.html

    Canola oil..............................don't touch it, it's one of the worst oils and I'm sure David bags it in his new book.
    We use coconut oil for grilling and frying on the barbeque and olive oil for salad dressings. But having just read David's extract from his new book, I imagine you'd be better just turning up the extractor fan!

    Yes, Freda, I'm thinking we might have to just try and solve the smoke problem in another way.  We did try the coconut oil once and it nearly made us gag - we cooked some eggplant and it really soaked it up.  Obviously we're not fans of coconut oil!

    Yes, my husband tried doing tempura with coconut oil and it simply didn't crisp up nicely and was very oily. But we are happy to use it for fry ups like bacon, eggs and sausages.
    Like you, I was horrified to see the comments about Rice oil, I too thought it was one of the oils which are ok and have two and a half bottles of it in my pantry. As you said............maybe we should use it to polish furniture!!!

    This might help you out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smoke_point.  What type of olive oil are you using?  We always use the extra light version (we get it from aldi), according to that list it's pretty good and can't say we've ever had problems with it.  I also do have peanut oil at home and I do know that peanut oil is very good with cooking at high temps.  Check the type of olive oil your using, otherwise I would definitely try peanut oil.
